Filming the World’s Fastest Land Animal

Thu, 06/06/2013 - 16:23 -- Nick Dager

National Geographic magazine challenged director of photography Greg Wilson to create a shot tracking a sprinting cheetah—in the spirit of Eadweard Muybridge’s 1878 image of a running horse. Combining the resources of National Geographic and the Cincinnati Zoo, and drawing on the skills of an incredible crew, Wilson and his team were responsible for simultaneously capturing motion picture images and high-resolution stills of the cheetah for use in the magazine.

The New Cinema

Thu, 06/06/2013 - 15:34 -- Nick Dager

Welcome to Digital Cinema Report 2.0. Starting with this issue the completely redesigned magazine now delivers daily updates, videos, direct links to social media, and easier access to the thousands of articles in our archives. Our redesign coincides with a turning point in the motion picture business. The digital cinema era has reached a plateau and while many see this as the end of something it is in reality just the beginning of fulfilling the promise that all the new technology has to offer – the beginning of the New Cinema era. When we launched Digital Cinema Report more than a decade ago 35mm film still dominated the motion picture industry and the Internet was just emerging as a cultural force. That has all changed and the New Cinema takes advantage of all the digital tools now available to make films and programs that are a genuine part of the social fabric, sometimes even in the conception, funding and development stages. The result is a growing number of events, movies, and documentaries that have powerful, personal and cultural messages. Last year’s The Invisible War is a perfect example. Made for less than a million dollars and nominated for many major awards, including the Oscar, it is a very important film.

The 12 Best Independent Movies of 2012

Thu, 06/06/2013 - 12:49 -- Anonymous (not verified)

Despite the long odds against them, the low budgets, the uncertainty about commercial success, independent filmmakers consistently deliver movies that are compelling and entertaining. The stories are unique and personal, and the acting from new and established actors alike is often better that what you normally see at the cineplex. Yet too few people have the chance to enjoy these films. Here are what I thought were the twelve best independent movies of 2012.

Post-production on Disconnect has been completed at Technicolor-Postworks in New York, where the work ran the gamut from dailies processing through digital intermediates colorist Tim Stipan (Moonrise Kingdom, Black Swan) applied the final grade, working alongside Rubin and cinematographer Ken Seng. Disconnect, the new drama from LD Entertainment and director Henry Alex Rubin, weaves three loosely related narrative lines, each of which relates to the Internet and the way it is affecting human relationships.

Wed, 06/05/2013 - 15:39 -- Nick Dager

Post house Light Iron has expanded its use of Christie digital cinema projectors. “We’ve used other manufacturer’s 4K projectors when 4K projectors first hit the streets, but the fact to the matter is it’s more important to be the best at something than the first. And the best 4K solution is exactly what Christie brings to the market. With its reliable and proven name, it was an easy decision to make Christie the standard for our screening rooms in both Los Angeles and New York City, with Christie Solaria 2K and 4K projectors in operation at both locations,” said Michael Cioni, CEO, Light Iron.

Michael Cioni Sees the Future

When Light Iron CEO Michael Cioni made the move to Manhattan from Los Angeles this past January, he wasn’t worrying about finding a good rental opportunity. After all, without really having to search, he was already set up quite nicely at 580 Broadway after a few months renovation. In a real estate deal said to go off with minimum hassle, Cioni’s Light Iron had taken the eighth floor space held by OffHollywood’s post-production operations, which included a sleek digital intermediates grading theater.
