Richard Crudo Named 2011 Kodak Cinematographer-in-Residence at UCLA

Kodak and UCLA have named Richard Crudo the 2011 Kodak Cinematographer-in-Residence for the spring quarter at UCLA's School of Theater Film and Television. The residency course now in its 12th consecutive year was inaugurated by professor William McDonald with the support of Kodak to enhance the learning experience of students with insight from renowned cinematographers.   The mentorship program began with a free screening of one of Crudo's past works American Buffalo at the James Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall on April 18.

Blue Sky Credits NVIDIA for Dance Scenes in Rio

Filmmakers at Blue Sky Studios give credit to NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics tools for helping bring a cast of dancing characters to life in their new movie Rio. The film had the biggest debut of any movie in 2011 thus far coming in number one at the box office with a $40 million opening weekend. Rio stars a computer generated Macaw named Blu who ends up at the heart of a wild adventure in Rio de Janeiro with a cast of street-smart friends and foes.

Jumping the Broom to Premiere Mother's Day Weekend

Johnson chairman of The RLJ Companies founder of Black Entertainment Television and founder and CEO of Our Stories Films has announced that their new film Jumping the Broom will premiere on Mother’s Day weekend. The movie was produced by Tracey E. Edmonds and is being released by TriStar a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company. It tells an inspirational and positive story of two very different families who meet for the first time at a weekend wedding in Martha's Vineyard.

Spice Shop Buys First Baselight 2 Control Surface

Spice Shop Bangkok has become the first post-production facility worldwide to purchase the new Blackboard 2 control surface for Baselight. FilmLight debuted Blackboard 2 at last month’s NAB convention in Las Vegas. 
“When we saw Blackboard 2 we understood immediately the impact it would have on our business and our facility and we knew we had to have it ” says Spice Shop director of operations Matthew Szabo.

Cineplex and Empire form Canadian Digital Cinema Partnership

Cineplex Entertainment and Empire Theatres Limited have formed the Canadian Digital Cinema Partnership to plan and implement the deployment of digital projection equipment in the two partner's theatres. The plan will include procuring equipment arranging financing and securing digital deployment agreements with studios and other content providers. Cineplex Entertainment and Empire Theatres Limited have appointed Blackstone Advisory Partners as their financial and structuring advisor for CDCP.

Cinemark to Build Fourteen-Screen Theatre Near Fort Worth

Cinemark Holdings has announced plans to construct a 14-screen all-digital movie theatre that will feature the company's new Cinemark NextGen design concept. Cinemark has entered into an agreement to purchase 10 acres in Presidio Junction a 300-acre master planned mixed-use development eight miles north of downtown Fort Worth Texas. Slated to open just in time for the 2012 summer blockbuster season the new Cinemark NextGen theatre will offer the latest technology amenities and customer-preferred options all under one roof.

Cobb Theatres Expands Deal with GDC

Codex Digital to Manufacture an ArriRaw Recorder

Codex Digital has reached an agreement with Arri to manufacture a Codex ArriRaw recorder for use with Arri’s Alexa and Arriflex D-21 film-style digital cameras. The new recorder will be marketed both directly and through Arri’s worldwide reseller network. Arri and its resellers will also be selling Codex camera mounts data packs and transfer stations. “We are pleased to work with Arri in introducing this new product to the market ” says Codex Digital managing director Marc Dando.

EFA Partners Secures Funding for Malco Theatres

EFA Partners has announced that it led and advised the recently closed financing facility for Malco Theatres to fund the conversion of more than 320 screens at 30 locations throughout the Southeastern United States.   “EFA’s unique knowledge and experience with film exhibition and digital cinema was extremely helpful in leading our financing process ” says Bobby Levy executive vice president of Malco Theatres.

Prime Focus Converting Star Wars: Episode I

Lucasfilm and Prime Focus have announced that they are collaborating on the 3D conversion of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace for theatrical release Prime Focus was selected by Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic following an exhaustive testing process. Utilizing Prime Focus' proprietary View-D process the conversion is scheduled to hit 3D theatre screens on February 10 2012. It was incredibly important to me that we have the technology the resources and the time to do this right says Star Wars creator George Lucas.

While not an easy task they believe their new program is the game-changer they have been searching for. Rushes Installs Cintel ditto Film Scanner

Rushes Post Production London has purchased a diTTo evolution film scanner from Cintel International.  The diTTo evolution will scan 35mm 2 3 and 4-perf film as well as 16mm film to 2K and 4K data for grading in the Resolve Color Correction suite.

Spatial View Signs Licensing Agreement for PassmoreLab 3D Content

Spatial View’s online source of stereo 3D content has entered into a licensing agreement with San Diego-based 3D Studio PassmoreLab for a number of their 3D titles. 3DeeCentral includes paid and free 3D content available for 3D PCs mobile and internet-connected devices. The content agreement includes titles in the genres of science and nature music videos extreme sports and animation. The platforms support a number of 3D devices using active shutter glasses polarized glasses anaglyph and auto-stereoscopic technologies.

El Chico Blanco Production to start in June

Titan Worldwide Entertainment will begin shooting the El Chico Blanco in June it was announced by chairman and CEO Brad Feinstein. 

El Chico Blanco tells the story of Ben Harper a white outcast raised in the barrio rises to a position of power against all odds. During a stint in prison he overcomes racial tension and biases to become the head of a notorious crime family entering into a world of drugs wealth and power. The film will be shot on location in New Mexico.
