Rethinking a Movie Theatre

Combining one of the oldest architectural designs in the Western world – the amphitheatre – with some of the most advanced motion picture exhibition technology available today may sound like a great idea for a new movie theatre. Applying that concept to an existing theatre, though, makes the challenge seem truly daunting. But that’s exactly what happened when B&B Theatres acquired an old movie house in Overland Park, Kansas and set about the work of making it their own. The result is the world’s second largest ScreenX auditorium and its first ScreenX Amphitheatre, complete with a unique approach to the DTS:X sound system.

UNIC Announces Support for NATO’s Technology Evaluation Program

The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), the trade body representing cinema operators and their national associations across 38 European territories, has voiced its support for the National Association of Theatre Owners resolution laying out aspects of its digital cinema technology evaluation program. The technology evaluation program was approved last month by NATO’s executive board at the organization’s annual meeting.

Gemini Man Stretches Technology Boundaries

Three-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee’s much anticipated new film, Paramount Pictures’ Gemini Man, premieres October 6 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. As has been the case with Lee’s most recent work, the film stretches technological boundaries by being produced in 4K resolution, stereoscopic 3D, and shot at 120 frames per second. The premiere will use Cinity, the new HFR cinema projection system developed by Christie for Huaxia Film Distribution. Christie’s strategic partnership with Huaxia Film Distribution and GDC Technology Limited resulted in the development of the Cinity Cinema System based on two Christie CP4450-RGB HFR projectors.

Alamo Drafthouse Installs Sony 4K Laser Projectors in Newest Theatre

Alamo Drafthouse’s newest location – its 39th – in Westminster, Colorado continues the cinema-eatery’s tradition of implementing Sony’s 4K laser digital cinema projection technology. The nine-screen, all-laser complex features Sony’s SRX-R815P and 815DS 4K laser projectors in auditoriums ranging in size from 78 Seats to 245 Seats. The projectors deliver a high contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and are high dynamic range and high frame rate capable.

Gemini Man Releasing Globally in ScreenX

CJ 4DPlex and Paramount Pictures have expanded their ongoing partnership to release the action-thriller Gemini Man in the ScreenX format. Directed by Ang Lee. Gemini Man in ScreenX will be shown in theaters worldwide beginning October 2, on 233 screens, across 22 countries. The film opens in the U.S. on October 11 at Regal Cinemas, B&B Theatres and CGV Cinemas.

NCM, Screenvision Support Global Food Campaign

National CineMedia and Screenvision are joining the next phase of Feed our Future, a global cinema ad campaign that shines a light on the United Nations World Food Program’s life-saving work on the frontlines of world hunger. Starting today, the advertisement will be shown on movie screens across the U.S. through November. The Feed our Future campaign is part of a unique partnership between SAWA, the Global Cinema Advertising Association and the WFP, which is the leading humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide.
