ASC to Honor Denzel Washington

Honoring one of Hollywood’s biggest icons, the American Society of Cinematographers will bestow their Board of Governors Award on director Denzel Washington on February 4, 2017, during the 31st ASC Awards at Hollywood & Highland’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. The organization presents the accolade to individuals in the industry whose body of work has made significant and indelible contributions to cinema. It is the only ASC Award not given to a cinematographer, and is reserved for filmmakers who have been champions for directors of photography and the visual art form.

MPSE to Honor Guillermo del Toro

The Motion Picture Sound Editors will honor Guillermo del Toro with its annual Filmmaker Award. The acclaimed director of such films as Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015) and the forthcoming The Shape of Water is being recognized for his outstanding contributions to the art of cinema. He will receive the award at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony February 19 in Los Angeles.

Kirschner Awarded NYWIFT Grant for Mallwalkers

New York Women in Film & Television has awarded its $7,500 Ravenal Foundation Grant to Debra Kirschner for Mallwalkers. Kirschner also wrote the script. The film follows a retired music teacher – a recent widow and a lifelong goody-goody – who is coaxed by her daughter to take daily walks in the local mall. There she connects with a wild posse of seniors who suspect foul play at the mall, and she becomes determined to put a stop to it.

DailyDOOH Honors Barco Lobby Experience

Live: A Barco Innovation Center in Los Angeles, California, won a DailyDOOH (digital out of home) Award in the category Best Stadium/Office Building/Corporate/Hotel, Hospitality or Leisure Install. The award, which was presented during a black-tie gala at the London Banqueting House last night, recognizes Barco’s commitment to taking the cinema experience to the next level from the moment moviegoers enter the theatre.

Belgian Princess to Honor Cinemark Founder

As part of the Belgian Economic Mission to the United States, Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, Representative of His Majesty the King, is visiting Austin and will honor Lee Roy Mitchell, the founder and executive chairman of Cinemark Holdings during her stay. This exclusive award is in recognition of the company’s longstanding relationship with Barco, a worldwide digital cinema leader and a Belgian-based company.

Director Makoto Shinkai’s widely acclaimed animated film Your Name. has been nominated for top awards by the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood. Your Name., from Toho Co. is being distributed in North America by Funimation Films. It picked up a nomination for Best Animated Feature – Independent and as well as a nomination for best direction of an animated feature.
