The March on Washington Film Festival has named the winners of its inaugural Student and Emerging Filmmaker Competition. The eight films were selected from 75 projects that responded to the question: what’s your civil right? Jurors named winners and runners-up in narrative and documentary categories, for both student and emerging filmmakers. The winning films showcase diverse and powerful young voices, and cover a range of issues including criminal justice reform, immigration, racial justice, sexuality, and gender identity.
For the second year in a row, the International Cinema Technology Association has honored QSC Cinema with the Teddy Award. Cinematographer Todd Sheridan and his film Frontman has been selected as the winner in the Vizio + Dolby Vision Filmmaker Challenge, a contest for the AFI Conservatory Film School. Frontman was scored highest out of five finalists by a panel of judges.
Sim Group companies provided production and post-production services to 20 television productions nominated in the 68th Emmy Awards. The 20 productions received a total of 123 nominations. The Society of Camera Operators has opened online submissions for the 2016 Technical Achievement Award, which will be presented in February 2017.
The New York Women in Film & Television’s first annual Sabrina Wright-Gilliar Scholarship will be presented to Briana Ayala June 28 at the Academy for Careers in Television and Film graduation ceremony at the Skirball Center. The scholarship honors the memory of the legendary prop master Wright-Gilliar and will be given to a female high school senior graduating from TvF in Queens.
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and the Hollywood Professional Association today announced the jurors for the second annual SMPTE-HPA Student Film Festival. The event is scheduled for October 26, following the Oktoberfest Reception at the SMPTE 2016 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition in Hollywood, California. The deadline for entries is June 27. For the second year in a row Nick Dager, editor and publisher of Digital Cinema Report will serve as a juror.
Cine Gear Expo proved once again to be Hollywood’s pre-eminent gathering for members of the top motion picture, video and new media community to see the latest industry art, technology and trends. This year did not disappoint the nearly 16,000 attendees. Highlighting the 2016 Special Screenings was Vittorio Storaro being honored with Cine Gear’s Cinematography Lifetime Achievement Award.
