With the rollout of DTS:X for immersive audio bitstream, IAB-compliant digital cinema packages will be labeled IAB in the composition playlist. Executives at DTS and GDC Technology Limited, a licensee of DTS Surround, DTS:X and DTS:X with IAB, want to clear up any confusion people might have about the technology. To that end, I spoke with Patrick Artiaga, senior director, business development, GDC Technology about the relatively new technology. Here is that conversation.
Digital Cinema Packages
In the wake of the pandemic, UFO Moviez India and Qube Cinema Technologies, have announced, subject to necessary approvals, their intention to forge a strategic alliance, proposing two 50:50 joint ventures aimed at bolstering the cinema industry recovery. One joint venture will be focused on the commercial monetization and marketing of the combined cinema advertising inventory, on behalf of UFO and Qube in India, and the other to oversee feature film mastering, localization, and content delivery within India and Nepal.
Qube Wire and Auwe Digital have announced that the content delivery network the two companies are building together in Brazil has grown to more than 100 theatres. Qube’s new Virtual WireTAP system allows theatres to utilize existing hardware to facilitate their connection to Qube Wire.
The Liquid Media Group subsidiary, Digital Cinema United, says it has established a presence in approximately 30 percent of U.S. movie theatres.
Mega Filem Enterprise and Qube Wire will operate a content delivery network serving all cinemas in Malaysia and Brunei. Qube Wire’s global cloud delivery platform is known for its ease of installation and operation. It provides a secure, efficient way to deliver content and keys for what the companies say is less money.
Unique X has renewed its long-term agreement with the Odeon Cinemas Group, Europe’s largest cinema operator, for the provision of RosettaBridge Theatre Management System, RosettaNet Circuit Management System and BaseKey. Unique X’s global digital cinema package delivery platform MovieTransit is already in operation at all Odeon Cinemas Group sites.
SMPTE Hollywood will explore the digital cinema package and its role in getting movies to the theatre at its April 13 in-person meeting. A pair of experts in feature film mastering will explain the varying components of DCPs, best practices in preparing them and new ways of delivering them to movie theaters.
