Taking on the Wild

The just released short film, The Refuge, focuses on the Gwich’in people of Alaska and Northern Canada and their more than three decade fight to protect the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling and other threats. Filming in such a remote location was severely challenging. As there are no cars in Arctic Village, bulky film equipment had to be transported by ATV or carried on foot. Electricity was also at a premium. Directors Kahlil Hudson and Alex Jablonski had access to just one electrical outlet for use in charging camera equipment and computers.

Although it serves a state with a population of less than 1.5 million people, First Hawaiian Bank is intent on reaching its audience with the sophistication of an international financial powerhouse. Teaming with Honolulu agency MVNP and Los Angeles-based production company Accomplice Media, FHB has launched an ambitious branding campaign centering on people coping with life’s milestones. Rather than pushing specific retail services—as most regional banks do—these funny, beautifully produced spots aim to forge an emotional connection with Hawaii residents from all walks of life.

Jean-Paul Frenay Joins Accomplice Media

Belgian-born director, creative director and visual artist Jean-Paul Frenay has joined Accomplice Media for U.S. advertising projects. Frenay’s eclectic output encompasses commercials, music videos, short films, live visual installations and photography. This includes award-winning work for such brands as Toyota, VW and CPH Bank. Frenay’s short film You Are the Canvas was a finalist in the Title Design competition at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. His most recent commercial project, a campaign for Lincoln and New York agency Hudson Rouge, showcases his mastery of storytelling and visual effects as a woman dances on the walls and ceiling of an elegant drawing room. He also directed a magical spot for Nissan and Digitas LBi Paris in which a Leaf “dreams” of traveling country roads while “sleeping” in a suburban garage.

Sherpas Cinema Takes Jeep Renegade on the Road

Accomplice Media’s directing team Sherpas Cinema collaborated with The Richards Group and Jeep on a new campaign launching the 2015 Jeep Renegade across North America. For the campaign’s 60-second launch spot, Sherpas Cinemas’ Eric Crosland captured the epic adventure of a band traveling America in search of musical stardom. Featuring Brooklyn indie rockers X Ambassadors and their original song Renegades, the spot debuted on the iHeartRadio Music Awards show.

Semel Directing The Man in the High Castle for Amazon

David Semel, who directs commercials through Accomplice Media, has a history of directing pilots that become hit television series. In his latest television outing, based on the award-winning Phillip K. Dick novel, The Man in the High Castle, Semel engages in a frightening, but enthralling, game of “What if?” Produced for Amazon by Ridley Scott the story is an alternate history set in the aftermath of World War II; in this telling, the Nazis and their Japanese allies were the victors. Semel directed the pilot, which is currently available through Amazon Prime’s instant video service.

Accomplice Media director Alberto Belli has attracted audiences of millions worldwide with his riotously funny short films. Earlier this year, his short comedy For Your Consideration became a worldwide viral sensation. A hilarious spoof of Les Miserables and actress Anne Hathaway’s desperate pursuit of an Oscar nomination, the film, generated millions of views on YouTube and was featured on The Today Show, Inside Edition and similar shows around the globe.
