Arts Alliance Media first opened its doors in London June 17, 2003. In those very early days of digital cinema, the new company and its ten employees carved out a space in technology and what was then called alternative content. The company divested itself of the alternative content business a few years ago to focus on what has long been its core strength: cinema technology. AAM launched its first theatre management system in 2007 and, in 2008, completed the first virtual print fee rollout in Europe with French chain CGR. Today AAM has more than 140 employees spread over three offices in London, Amsterdam, and Guangzhou, China. I recently spoke via email with AAM’s chief executive officer Patrick Foley, and chief technology officer Richard Phillips about those early days of the company and, more importantly, to get their thoughts about the future of digital cinema technology.

IBC2018 to Hold Cyber Security Forum

IBC2018 today announced a Cyber Security Forum for broadcasters and media. The event will be part of the annual IBC show at the RAI Convention Center in Amsterdam September 13-18. A one-day, invitation-only event, it will convene chief technology officers, chief information officers, chief information security officers and chief digital officers within media and broadcasting for a conversation on the challenges and opportunities presented by cyber security for broadcasters.

Sony Restores Classic WWII Era Film

Sony Pictures Entertainment recently completed a 4K restoration of None Shall Escape, the 1943 Columbia Pictures drama widely credited as the first film to address the subject of the Nazi Holocaust. The newly restored film recently had its world premiere at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, with one of the film’s stars, 100-year-old actress Marsha Hunt, in attendance.

Universal, Film Foundation Partner on Restoration

Universal Pictures and The Film Foundation have announced a multi-year partnership to restore a handpicked selection of the studios' classic titles. With this collaboration, Universal will fund the restorations as well as provide research and technical services. Through The Film Foundation, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg will be personally involved in the process contributing their unique artistic expertise and historical knowledge throughout the restoration process. The restored versions will be screened at film festivals and archives around the world. The 2018 restoration slate includes the following:

SMPTE Releases Report on Flow Management in Professional Media Networks

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced the publication of the Report of the Study Group on Flow Management in Professional Media Networks. The new, 52-page report investigates current and future technologies for media content flow management in professional media networks, explores user requirements, examines potential transmission methods for management commands, provides an overview of existing standards and specifications now available to the professional media industry, and offers a series of recommendations to the industry including some for future work.
