Cameron Shooting Avatar Sequels with Sony Venice

James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment will use Sony’s new Venice motion picture camera system for principal photography on the upcoming Avatar sequels. The first Avatar movie, released in 2009 and also shot on Sony professional cameras, shattered box office records with its compelling story, immersive 3D and stunning visuals. These newest entries in the franchise promise to up the visual ante significantly with enhanced special effects, more elaborate production requirements and challenging live action sequences.

Christie, Cameron Renew Technology Agreement

Christie has announced that James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment has renewed an exclusive, five-year agreement with the company for sharing know-how and technology to propel the future of immersive cinema experiences. “To push the boundary of digital cinema, one needs visionary, like-minded collaborators and that description fits Christie to a tee, given its long cinema heritage and impressive list of industry ‘firsts’ in the projection and visual display realms,” said Cameron. “Several years ago we began our relationship, which has worked well, so I’m pleased to be forging ahead again with Christie at my side.”

ArcLight Cinerama Dome Upgrades for Billy Lynn

ArcLight Cinemas has collaborated with Christie to custom fit the legendary Cinerama Dome in order to properly project the west-coast debut of Academy-award winning director Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk in 3D 4K 120 frames-per-seconds, the way it was shot. The debut will be held November 10.

Ateme Joins Scenarists’s UHDG Focus Group

Ateme has joined Scenarist’s Ultra HD BD focus group called the UHDG. As part of the UHDG, Ateme is working closely with Scenarist to provide HEVC high dynamic range and high frame rate encoding technology in UHD resolution to Scenarist UHD customers who are developing the first titles for Ultra HD Blu-ray. The group says the result of the collaboration will significantly help UHDG authoring companies and content owners to deliver blockbuster movies in thrilling ultra high definition UHD resolution with a greatly expanded color and brilliance.
