Red Digital Cinema’s new Komodo 6K camera system is now available to order. The highly anticipated Komodo 6K comes to market after extensive engineering to incorporate production-tested innovations, including a breakthrough global shutter sensor (27.03mm x 14.26mm) that maintains Red’s standard of image quality and dynamic range. The camera is packaged in a small four-cubic-inch (101.6 mm) form factor and weighs only 2.1 pounds (0.95 kgs).

Gemini Man Stretches Technology Boundaries

Three-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee’s much anticipated new film, Paramount Pictures’ Gemini Man, premieres October 6 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. As has been the case with Lee’s most recent work, the film stretches technological boundaries by being produced in 4K resolution, stereoscopic 3D, and shot at 120 frames per second. The premiere will use Cinity, the new HFR cinema projection system developed by Christie for Huaxia Film Distribution. Christie’s strategic partnership with Huaxia Film Distribution and GDC Technology Limited resulted in the development of the Cinity Cinema System based on two Christie CP4450-RGB HFR projectors.

Alamo Drafthouse Installs Sony 4K Laser Projectors in Newest Theatre

Alamo Drafthouse’s newest location – its 39th – in Westminster, Colorado continues the cinema-eatery’s tradition of implementing Sony’s 4K laser digital cinema projection technology. The nine-screen, all-laser complex features Sony’s SRX-R815P and 815DS 4K laser projectors in auditoriums ranging in size from 78 Seats to 245 Seats. The projectors deliver a high contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and are high dynamic range and high frame rate capable.

Cinity Cinema System Gets Official Launch

Huaxia Film Distribution recently held a grand launch in Beijing to formally introduce the Cinity Cinema System, which was unveiled earlier this year in Las Vegas at CinemaCon. A trailer of Gemini Man, the new film by Oscar award winning director Ang Lee was shown. Lee used the Cinity Cinema System to produce his latest film, Gemini Man in 4K stereoscopic 3D at 120 frames per second. He screened a trailer of the new film and made a video address to the audience gathered for the event.

CinemaNext Upgrades Neocine Thader in Murcia, Spain

European cinema exhibitor services provider CinemaNext, today announced the completion of its first fourth generation laser-powered 4K RGB projection system installation at the Neocine cinema in the Thader shopping mall in Murcia, Spain. The SP4K-25 Barco projector with Alchemy server setup at Neocine marks a European first by CinemaNext and its Valencia-based services center since Cinionic began selling the new Barco series 4 platform in April.

Red Releases the R3D SDK for Real-Time 8K Playback

Red Digital Cinema has released its Red R3D SDK and accompanying RedCine-X Pro software with accelerated decode and debayering on Nvidia CUDA platforms. By offloading the compute-intensive decoding and debayering of Red R3D files onto one or more Nvidia GPUs, the company says that real-time playback, edit and color grade of 8K footage is now possible.

GDC Technology Unveils FAST Media Servers

GDC Technology has introduced the SR-5400 and the SR-6400 series media servers with Flexible Architecture Stable Technology (FAST) for 4K high frame rate movies and 4K 3D. The SR-5400 is compatible with new DLP Cinema projectors that are capable of playing DCP content in 4K 3D and 4K@60fps. The SR-6400C has all the key features and benefits of the SR-5400 and further enhances its capabilities to include ground breaking 4K@120fps playback. It is compatible with the new Christie projector featuring RealLaser illumination and CineLife+.

CinemaCon 2019: A Watershed Event?

A highlight of this year’s CinemaCon, which wrapped up Thursday, April 4, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, was the announcement of the formation of the Cinity Cinema System, a joint effort between the Huaxia Film Distribution Company, Christie Digital Systems and GDC Technology to “develop, leverage and promote premium format movies driven by new, advanced configurations.” The announcement follows several years of debate in Hollywood and around the world regarding the best way to move forward with critical technology issues including high dynamic range, high frame rate, wide color gamut and immersive sound. Those issues were widely discussed at CinemaCon and we will have more to say about the show in the coming days. But the Cinity Cinema System announcement stands out because it feels like a watershed event. The question now is this: is Hollywood still the center of the motion picture industry or is that center shifting to China?

Sony Upgrades Venice to Include 4K HFR Shooting

Sony is upgrading the capabilities of its Venice motion picture camera system by introducing high frame rate shooting, advanced remote-control functionalities and Cooke/i3 and Zeiss extended metadata support, as part of its latest firmware update. Both the free upgrade to firmware Version 4.0 and the optional HFR license will be available in June.
