Night of the Living Dead Gets a 3D Animation Reboot

With a seemingly unquenchable appetite for zombie movies, movie-goers will get their fill in 2014 with Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D, a 3D animated reboot of the original 1968 horror classic. The film features visual effects from The Graphics Film Company, which relied on the iPi Soft iPi Motion Capture markerless motion capture software solution. The software’s ability to easily create massive amounts of zombie action and seamlessly integrate it with the studio’s complex workflow, provided the filmmakers limitless creative freedom

Work it like a Rock Star

Eugene Riecansky claims it was love at first sight. It was about eight years ago, the visual effects and music industry veteran was working on a video for alternative metal band Deftones and first encountered Autodesk software at a participating post house. A recent project had the team creating tour visuals for international DJ, Skism. After using Maya to help create pristine elements such as Snakes wrapped around neon crosses, huge robotic structures, and pulsating skulls, the Rockstar team was able to move the entire project, including the 3D assets created in Maya, quickly and easily into Smoke to bring everything together and provide animations ready for the DJ to use live on tour

Legend3D Upgrades Facility with an SGO Mistika System

Legend3D has announced that has purchased a Mistika 3D system from SGO. It will integrate its Mistika post-production system with two Assist Stations into the conversion and visual effects pipeline at the company's 60,000 square foot studio with multiple theatres and R&D facilities. With the capacity to work on up to three full feature films and multiple commercials concurrently, Legend3D has delivered projects such as The Lego Movie, Man of Steel, Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Smurfs 1 & 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and many others.

Hoax Films Explores New Territory with Experiential Website

Kevin Xu, CEO of Mebo International believes he has come up with a novel way to introduce audience to the achievements of organ regeneration science. Visitors to the California-based company’s campus website (www.regeneration2013.com) find themselves in a computer-generated floating city that’s home to a towering library, a giant rotating sphere and other iconic wonders. Visitors can choose to tour the city on foot or from the seat of a translucent shuttlecraft while a narrator describes “a revolution in science that will change our lives.”

Thinkbox Software Announces Krakatoa for Maxon Cinema 4D

Thinkbox Software has acquired code to bring its particle renderer, Krakatoa, into Maxon’s Cinema 4D modeling and animation software. Initial efforts to link the plug-in with Cinema 4D were led by Ugly Kids artist Daniel Hennies, who collaborated with a developer to program a bridge to the stand-alone version of Krakatoa. Leveraging the C++ API of Krakatoa SR, Hennies and a small team were able to fully integrate the particle renderer with Cinema 4D and first demoed the technology at SIGGRAPH 2013.

Thinkbox Releases XMesh MY Geometry Caching Tool for Maya

Thinkbox Software has released XMesh MY, a geometry caching plug-in for Autodesk Maya. Designed to streamline animation and visual effects production pipelines, XMesh is a set of tools for saving animated scene geometry in a condensed format that yields smaller files for faster loading, manipulation and sharing across facilities and applications. Also compatible with Autodesk 3ds Max, the robust and scalable multi-threaded solution allows artists to quickly open, share or receive computer generated assets from internal studio departments or external facilities.
