SMPTE and HPA Issue Call for Entries for SMPTE-HPA Student Film Festival
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and the Hollywood Post Alliance have issued a call for entries for the SMPTE-HPA Student Film Festival. The event is scheduled for October 27 following the Opening Night Reception for the SMPTE 2015 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition in Hollywood, California, and will be hosted by SMPTE Standards Director and film director Howard Lukk. The deadline for entries is September 9.
Downtown L.A. Announces Feature Lineup for 7th Festival
Organizers of the nonprofit Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles have announced its 7th annual feature film line-up. The five-day event, July 22-26, will be held in venues throughout downtown L.A.’s historic core with The Regent Theater serving as the festival’s primary venue.
AFI Docs Names Audience Award Winners
The AFI Docs five-day festival wrapped up this week in the Washington, DC area. This year's Audience Award for Best Feature went to What Happened, Miss Simone? directed by Liz Garbus. This year's Audience Award for Best Short went to A Conversation with My Black Son directed by Blair Foster and Geeta Gandbhir. With 81 films from 25 countries, the festival brought together artists, national policy and opinion leaders along with global representatives.

Red Digital Cinema and Surfer Magazine announces the kickoff of ReDirect Surf 2015. This is the second installment of the ReDirect series – a competition and celebration of filmmaking visionaries across the globe, highlighting varying genres. Christie Supports Shanghai International Film Festival for Seventh Year
Christie is serving as the exclusive digital projection partner for the Shanghai International Film Festival for the seventh consecutive year. The 18th annual Shanghai International Film Festival will take place from June 13-21. Known as China’s only non-specialized competitive international film festival accredited by the Paris-based Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films, the festival kicked off in style with the screening of veteran Hong Kong director Derek Yee’s new film, I Am Somebody, while China-Russian co-production Ballet in the Flames of War will close the event.

The 18th annual Brooklyn Film Festival wrapped up on Sunday with a gala evening its new venue, the Wythe Hotel, handing out a total of $50,000 in products and film services.
Majority of Films at Cannes Film Festival Shot with Arri Gear
Nearly 60 percent of the feature films from all selections at the recently wrapped Cannes film festival were shot with Arri equipment and more than 40 percent were captured with the Arri Alexa and Arri cine lenses. Overall, more than half of the festival’s films that were shot digitally used Alexa as their main camera, Arri announced today.
