Black Film Festival Honors Co-Founder Sergio Mims

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center has announced the full festival schedule for the 28th Annual Black Harvest Film Festival, which will take place in person November 4-20 at the Gene Siskel Film Center and virtually from November 21-27. This year’s festival will be dedicated to Sergio Mims, the co-founder of the festival and its longtime co-programmer and consultant, who passed away October 4.

First Global Stage Hollywood Film Festival Begins October 28

With the support from Consulate General of Japan – Los Angeles, the inaugural edition of the Global Stage Hollywood Film Festival will be at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood October 28-29. The opening film will be Poupelle of Chimney Town which has been recognized with several awards, including a Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Animation of the Year, a Cristal Award nomination from Annecy for Best Feature, an Annie awards nomination for Best Music – Feature, and a Satoshi Kon Award nomination from Fantasia for Best Animated Feature.

DTLA Film Festival Names Winners

The 13th annual DTLA Film Festival has announced its winners. Florencia Krochik’s The Rest of Us, a feature documentary about DACA kids shot over a decade, won Best Picture. Other winners included director Martin Torrez’ The Great American Low Rider Tradition, a feature documentary about the Lowrider culture of East Los Angeles, which took the Audience Favorite Award Sophie Galibert was named Best Director for Cherry, a narrative dramedy that tackles the hot-button topic of abortion.
