The result is that the Surrey-based 36-year-old now specializes in exploring and recording the beauty of our planet’s most remote places, and clients globally utilize Vlad’s self-funded services and sounds. Hollywood film studios, game development studios and production companies like Netflix license his content.

DPA Microphones Part of Historic Perseverance Rover Mission

Some stories transcend cinema. This is one of them. NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover touched down on the Red Planet last week, with DPA Microphones along for the historic ride. Outfitted with DPA’s 4006 Omnidirectional Microphone, MMA-A Digital Audio Interface and MMP-G Modular Active Cable, the rover provided the first sounds from the surface of Mars.

The brands joined forces to support the film industry during these unprecedented times by offering first-time and indie filmmakers the opportunity to win a customized DPA/Rycote filming kit. Sometimes Size Really Does Matter

When Gene Martin, owner of Audio Department and Sound Guy Solutions, was presented with a technical nightmare for a commercial client in the early days of COVID, his sound mixer gears started turning. With scenes being shot in separate areas around the U.S., Martin had to juggle as many as 10 different drop kit audio packages at a time. As he was on-location with the main crew in California, he also had to account for remote workflows as well as social distancing protocols.

The Challenges of Production Sound

Like many of his colleagues in the sound production industry, Scott Harber began his audio career as a musician, more specifically as a member of a San Diego punk rock band. Over the course of his nearly 30-year career, Harber has worked on leading TV and film productions, including Borat, Noctunal Animals, Get Smart, Hell’s Kitchen, Gangster Squad, Wilfred and Castle, to name a few. He also owns Dang Me Sound, a production sound company based in Los Angeles. I recently spoke with Harber about some of the highlights his long career and the challenges of production sound.

NASA Rover Perseverance to Capture the Sounds of Mars

NASA’s Mars 2020 Rover Perseverance, which launched last week, is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet next February. When it lands, the spacecraft will have the capability to capture imagery and sound as the vehicle descends through the Martian atmosphere and lands on the surface of Mars. To capture sounds from the Red Planet for the first time ever, the Mars 2020 Rover will be outfitted with equipment from DPA Microphones.
