Motion Picture Sound Editors Present 66th Annual Golden Reel Awards

The Motion Pictures Sound Editors presented the 66th MPSE Annual Golden Reel Awards at a black-tie ceremony at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles last Saturday night. Golden Reel Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in sound editing were presented in 23 categories encompassing feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries, games, special venue and other media.

Sound Lounge Turns Twenty

Twenty years ago, Sound Lounge was born out of a desire to create something that did not exist in the audio post-production community. Tom Jucarone, Peter Holcomb and Marshall Grupp imagined an artist-owned studio that put a premium on excellence in everything related to sound, but with a laid-back, friendly vibe. It would be a studio packed to the rafters with state-of-the-art gear, a place where they could work at a high level and nurture the next generation of sound talent, but also a “home” where they wouldn’t mind hanging out after the work was finished.

Sony Completes Spider-Verse Sound

Sound production for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animations’ feature film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which has received critical acclaim including a Golden Globe nomination and a New York Film Critics Circle win for Best Animated Feature and a Los Angeles Film Critics Association win for Best Animation, was completed on the Sony Pictures studio lot in Culver City.

New DPA Mic Passes Its First Screen Test

Oscar winner Simon Hayes has become the first production sound mixer to use DPA’s new d:screet Core 6000 Series subminiature microphones on a major feature film. The currently untitled movie, which is due for release in 2019, is a musical comedy directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Notting Hill). Although details of the plot are sketchy, it is set in the 1960s and 1970s and stars Lily James, Kate McKinnon, Ed Sheeran and Himesh Patel.

Venom Sound Mix Completed at Sony

Box office hit, Venom, from Columbia Pictures, was among the first films to have its sound work completed through Sony Pictures Post Production Services’ expanded facilities on the studio lot in Culver City. Supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer/sound designer Will Files and his crew used a new theater-style sound design suite to create sound effects for the film, which stars Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as both the alien symbiote Venom and its human host, Eddie Brock

Sound Lounge Expands Film and Television Division; Adds Evan Benjamin to Team

Sound Lounge is expanding its film and television division, which provides sound editorial, ADR and mixing services for episodic television, features and documentaries. The studio is upgrading the division’s main mix stage to support editing and mixing in the immersive Dolby Atmos format. It has also added veteran supervising sound editor, designer and re-recording mixer Evan Benjamin to its team. Benjamin is best known for his work in documentaries, including the acclaimed feature documentary, RBG, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as well as documentary series for Netflix, Paramount Network, HBO, and PBS.
