ICTA Names EMEA Award Winners

The International Cinema Technology Association has announced the 2022 winners of the ICTA EMEA Awards, celebrating technological leadership, design and innovation in the cinema exhibition sector. The award winners are Le Grand Rex, Paris, Classic Cinema of the Year; UGC Ciné Cité Part-Dieu, Lyon, New Build Cinema of the Year; and Cineworld, Belfast, Best Cinema Refurbishment of the Year. Rolv Gjestland of Film & Kino Norway will be presented with a special recognition award to celebrate his contributions to cinema design, presentation excellence and international collaboration in cinema.

European Box Office Had Mixed Results in 2021

Although admissions in the European Union and the UK increased by 31.5 percent in 2021, it turned out to be another difficult year for cinema going in the region, according to a report from the European Audiovisual Observatory. Multiple factors, like the ongoing closures of cinemas, particularly in the first half of the year, the negative effect of attendance restrictions, possible hesitancy among audiences to return to cinemas, the return of US studio blockbusters and the differing strength of local films, contributed to the European theatrical markets making progress, but rather slow progress, in returning to pre-pandemic levels.

UNIC, Film Expo Group Announce 2022 CineEurope Gold Award Winners

The Union Internationale des Cinémas/International Union of Cinemas and the Film Expo Group have announced the recipients of the 2022 CineEurope Gold Awards, given to cinema professionals in recognition of their outstanding dedication and service to the sector. The Awards will be presented as part of the CineEurope Awards Ceremony on June 23 at the Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain.

Göteborg Opens Call for Film Fund Residencies

In cooperation with The University of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland, the Göteborg Film Fund 2022 is now opening the call for three residencies with a duration of three months each. The Göteborg Film Fund is an initiative from Göteborg Film Festival to support films and filmmakers in regions where filmmaking is difficult, due to economic or political reasons.

Roelink Winner of the 2022 UNIC Achievement Award

Géke Roelink, managing director of Filmhuis Den Haag, has been named the 2022 recipient of the UNIC Achievement Award, given each year in recognition of outstanding dedication and service to European cinema exhibition. The award will be presented as part of the CineEurope Awards Ceremony on Thursday 23 June at the Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain.

CGR Cinemas for Sale

CGR Cinemas, France’s second biggest multiplex chain behind Pathé, has been put on the market by its owners, Luc and Charles Raymond. The family-owned business has an estimated value of about $1.1 billion, according to Jocelyn Bouyssy, CGR’s long-time managing director who has been assigned to find a buyer for the group.
