The ASC Technology Committee has been renamed the ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council. Established in 2003, the committee has helped organize efforts to study and assess subjects ranging from digital cameras and lens optics to motion imaging workflows, advanced color management, virtual production techniques digital archiving and more recently virtual reality.
Samsung Electronics today announced that it has installed its first commercial Cinema LED Screen at Lotte Cinema World Tower in Korea. The high dynamic range display is the result of collaboration between Harman Professional Solutions and Samsung Audio Lab.
Éclair and EuropaCorp have announced that Luc Besson’s latest film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, will be available in ÉclairColor and in 2D in select cinemas in France July 26 and in Germany July 20, via Universum Films.
Netflix this week committed to streaming its movies in both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision high-dynamic range formats. It is the first global on-demand service to commit to combining both formats. Okja, the critically praised Netflix Original Film, is the first film available in both formats. Additional Dolby-supported titles are coming soon, and the catalog will continue to grow. Okja will be released to select movie theatres this week as well. Netflix has raised the stakes again.

Christie has announced that James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment has renewed an exclusive, five-year agreement with the company for sharing know-how and technology to propel the future of immersive cinema experiences. “To push the boundary of digital cinema, one needs visionary, like-minded collaborators and that description fits Christie to a tee, given its long cinema heritage and impressive list of industry ‘firsts’ in the projection and visual display realms,” said Cameron. “Several years ago we began our relationship, which has worked well, so I’m pleased to be forging ahead again with Christie at my side.”
French cinema exhibitor Megarama has signed an agreement to install EclairColor HDR technology on 15 screens. “We will deploy the new EclairColor HDR technology at 10 of our cinema sites across France with the first two cinemas – Megarama Bordeaux and Megarama Villeneuve-La-Garenne – to be equipped in April,” said Jean-Pierre Lemoine, president and CEO of Megarama Group. “After laser technology, we are continuing to invest in the modernization of our own cinema equipment with EclairColor, a brand new, affordable HDR technology powered by Sony Digital Cinema 4K SRX-515 projection system technology.
