Arri Opens New Office in Rome

Arri has opened a new office in Rome to further promote and support the film and audiovisual industry in Italy. To celebrate this important milestone, an opening ceremony took place on May 3. More than 100 guests from the Italian film industry, including cinematographers, producers, directors, business partners, postproduction and rental professionals gathered to toast the new premises. The event was also attended by members of Arri’s global management team.

Lars Weyer has been appointed as a new executive board member and chief financial officer of Arri. The announcement was made by the supervisory board of the global film technology company. In this position, Weyer is responsible for the finance, human resources, IT, and facility management departments.

In October 1948, Jesse Brown became the first African American to complete the U.S. Navy’s flight training program and received his Naval Aviator Badge. The feature Devotion, directed by J.D. Dillard and based on the bestselling book by Adam Makos, recounts the true story of Brown’s distinguished service, focusing on the year 1950, at the onset of the Korean War, when he and his fellow pilots in Fighter Squadron 32 deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte, first to the Mediterranean Sea and then to the East Sea, off the coast of North Korea.

Among the newest additions to Rising Sun Pictures’ Brisbane Studio is lighting artist Matt Dorey. A 2018 recipient of the studio’s Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting, Dorey began his career at Pixel Zoo, Brisbane, and earned his first screen credit at Mill Film Adelaide (now MPC) on the post-apocalyptic drama Love and Monsters (a 2021 Oscar nominee for Best Visual Effects). He also spent two years in Toronto at the studios Mr. X and MPC, contributing to projects including Cowboy Bebop, Nightmare Alley, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Barbarian: Tethered to Reality

When cinematographer Zach Kuperstein got the job to shoot writer-director Zach Cregger’s horror feature Barbarian, one of the first things he did was reach out to Light Iron senior colorist Sam Daley. The two had previously worked together on a short and three independent features — The Eyes of My Mother, The Vigil, and Paper Spiders — but their collaborations began during post, not during pre-production.
