Motion Picture Sound Editors Name Board Members

The Motion Picture Sound Editors has announced the results of the 2013 election of its Board of Directors. Elected to two-year terms in Executive Seats are Frank Morrone as President, Christopher Reeves as Secretary, and Ruth Adelman as Sargent at Arms. Morrone and Reeves are incumbents. They join continuing officers Mark Lanza (Vice President) and Paul Rodriguez (Treasurer).

Integrating Sound into The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Park Road Post ProductionThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was brought to life at Park Road Post Production, New Zealand, where the production team mastered both high frame rate stereoscopic 3D at 48 frames per second and immersive Dolby Atmos sound, and integrated it all into the digital cinema package process.

The main tool they used for the task was the DVS Clipster, which allows for the world’s first implemented high frame rate DCI workflow with Dolby Atmos.

Sound Editor Randy Thom to be honored with MPSE Career Achievement Award

The Motion Picture Sound Editors will be honoring Randy Thom, director of sound design at Skywalker Sound, with its prestigious MPSE Career Achievement Award. Thom is a two-time Academy Award-winner (The Right Stuff, The Incredibles) and a 14-time Oscar nominee. He has contributed to more than 100 films as a sound designer and re-recording mixer. He will receive the award at the 61ST MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony held on February 16, 2014, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites, Los Angeles, California.

Suresh Productions, Ramanaidu Studios Adopt Barco Auro 11.1 3D Sound

Moviegoers in India’s southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh will soon discover what it means to be truly immersed in sound. A hundred theaters will soon be equipped with Auro 11.1 by Barco sound technology. Two post-production and mixing facilities belonging to Ramanaidu Studios – all collaborating with film production company Suresh Productions – will install the certified Auro-3D Studio System.
