Native Cinema Showcase Begins August 16

The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian will present the 16th annual Native Cinema Showcase, the museum's premier film event, during the week of August 16–21 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. SMPTE Launches Vista Project to Support Emerging Filmmakers

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers today announced the official launch of The Vista Project, a competition that will identify emerging talent in the creative and engineering realms and support future filmmakers in developing interactive cinema experiences. Open exclusively to students enrolled in a two- or four-year accredited university-level undergraduate or graduate program, the competition will award five finalists with $5,000 to create a 10-minute short that could serve as a template for a long-form interactive cinema experience.

Jury Named for SMPTE-HPA Student Film Festival

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and the Hollywood Professional Association today announced the jurors for the second annual SMPTE-HPA Student Film Festival. The event is scheduled for October 26, following the Oktoberfest Reception at the SMPTE 2016 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition in Hollywood, California. The deadline for entries is June 27. For the second year in a row Nick Dager, editor and publisher of Digital Cinema Report will serve as a juror.

Crafting a Classic New York Romance

Post work for director Rebecca Miller’s new romantic comedy Maggie’s Plan, currently in wide release from Sony Pictures Classics, was a labor of love for Technicolor PostWorks New York. A long-time supporter of independent film, the facility furnished suites and systems to picture editor Sabine Hoffman and her crew. It also provided resources for dailies processing, editorial finishing, color grading, sound mixing and deliverables. The project involved months of concentrated effort, spanning pre-production through the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

IFP Filmmaker Labs Winners Announced

The Independent Filmmaker Project has announced the ten narratives selected for the 2016 IFP Filmmaker Labs, IFP’s annual yearlong fellowship for first-time feature directors. The creative teams of the selected films are currently attending the first week’s sessions – The Time Warner Foundation Completion Labs – taking place May 23-27 in New York City.
