CJ 4DPlex today announced that its multi-sensory 4DX format drew $23 million at the global box office in January, up 18 percent year-over-year, making it the highest ever recorded for the month of January in the history of the company, this despite screenings being suspended in China for several days.
CJ 4DPlex ended a successful 2019 with a record-breaking global box office for theatres with 4DX immersive seats, grossing more than $320 million, according to the company. With its best year yet at the global box office in 2019, ticket sales for movies shown in 4DX theatres increased 12 percent over 2018's record of $286 million. CJ 4DPlex unveiled what it called the world’s first four-sided 4DX Screen movie theatre at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show currently underway in Las Vegas. The company also introduced an indoor AR platform that seamlessly combines reality with virtual objects and announced an ultra-wide zoom lens in development, which can reduce projection distance by 70 percent compared to standard projection lens.
The Aquarium of the Pacific, located near the waterfront in Long Beach, California, recently opened its “aquarium of the future,” called Pacific Visions, which features an immersive theatre, multiple interactive art installations, and hands-on multimedia displays. Brian Edwards, owner of Edwards Technologies, the integration firm that designed and installed the theatre AV and FX system at aquarium, says the project is an example of the future of both the AV industry and of storytelling as a whole.
CJ 4DPlex today named Don Savant CEO of CJ 4DPlex Americas, the U.S. branch of the groundbreaking next-generation motion picture technology company. Savant will be responsible for growing both premium formats, 4DX and ScreenX, in the Americas, while continuing to collaborate with movie studios to deliver the best films in both formats for consumers.

Cineplex today announced that it had added new immersive theatre formats 4DX and ScreenX in locations across Canada. The multi-sensory 4DX experience is now open at three new locations: Cineplex Cinemas Winston Churchill in Oakville, Ontario; Cineplex Cinemas Hamilton Mountain in Stoney Creek, Ontario; and Scotiabank Theatre Edmonton in Edmonton, Alberta.
B&B Theatres has opened its eighth MX4D theatre system in Wylie, Texas, a growing Northeast suburb of Dallas. The first film to play there in MX4D is Sony's Jumanji the Next Level, followed by the imminent engagement of Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
