Ang Lee Discusses the 120fps Experience

“At 120 frames per second your eyes get greedy,” said Hollywood film director Ang Lee at the first European showing of footage from his latest film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. There were other firsts, as the movie was screened at 120fps, in 4K 3D, at 28 foot-lamberts per eye brightness. The presentation was the keynote at this year’s IBC Big Screen Experience. Long-standing show director Julian Pinn opened the session promising, “I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say this is cinema history in the making.” Pinn added that the clips would be shown on the Christie Mirage, calling it the only projector capable of showing 120fps, 3D, 4K at 28 foot-lamberts.

What ASC’s Cinema Display Evaluation Means

The American Society of Cinematography’s Cinema Display Evaluation Plan & Test Protocol is a key step towards establishing goals for an enhanced cinema experience. It was developed by the ASC’s Next Generation Cinema Display technology subcommittee in response to the emergence of new cinema technologies, and the resulting need for guidance among exhibitors, distributors, and technology providers. As co-chairs of the NGCD committee, we would like to take this opportunity to provide some background and the anticipated direction for this work.

Venice International Film Festival Selects GetD for 3D Screenings

For the first time, GetD 3D will supply its cinema systems and glasses for the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, taking place August 31 through September 10. The Venice International Film Festival is the oldest of its kind founded in 1932. 3D projection has become a tradition for many years and the organizers will have another promising line up in 2016.

The split-screen experience debuted during 3D showings of summer blockbusters Finding Dory, Independence Day: Resurgence, and The Secret Life of Pets in the UK only. Moviegoers will have a first-of-its-kind, immersive experience that contrasts standardized mass tourism with the unique moments of travel and authentic experiences only possible while traveling on Airbnb.
