British Private Equity Firm LDC Invests in Sohonet

The British mid-market private equity firm LDC has invested in Sohonet, an international provider of connectivity, collaboration software, media services and network security for the media and entertainment industry. Report Shows Pandemic Impact on U.S. Cinemas; Lack of Content Key

A new report from the analyst firm Gower Street shows that nearly a quarter (23 percent) of all U.S. movie theatres have stayed closed since March 2020. These locations generated a combined yearly box office of $1.8 billion on average in 2018 and 2019. The report makes clear that the situation will remain difficult until quality movies are available on a regular and consistent basis.

Report Tracks Pandemic-Related Box Office Decline in Europe and the UK

Based on preliminary data the European Audiovisual Observatory estimates that cinema attendance in the European Union and the United Kingdom plummeted to 294.7 million admissions in 2020. This is 712.3 million ticket sales fewer than in 2019, representing a decline of 70.7 percent. A similar decrease (69.8 percent) was registered in the European Union only (EU27), where admissions dropped from 831.0 million to 250.7 million, for a total loss of 580.3 million tickets.

AMC Statement Regarding Opening of NYC Cinemas

In response to the announcement that movie theatres can reopen in New York City, Adam Aron, CEO and president of AMC Entertainment issued the following statement: "Governor Cuomo's announcement that movie theatres can reopen in New York City in the first week of March is another important step towards restoring the health of the movie theatre industry and of our Company. We are excited to announce that AMC, the largest movie theatre exhibitor in New York City, will reopen all 13 of our theatres in New York City beginning March 5.
