European Box Office Had Mixed Results in 2021

Although admissions in the European Union and the UK increased by 31.5 percent in 2021, it turned out to be another difficult year for cinema going in the region, according to a report from the European Audiovisual Observatory. Multiple factors, like the ongoing closures of cinemas, particularly in the first half of the year, the negative effect of attendance restrictions, possible hesitancy among audiences to return to cinemas, the return of US studio blockbusters and the differing strength of local films, contributed to the European theatrical markets making progress, but rather slow progress, in returning to pre-pandemic levels.

Doctor Strange Delivers

The Marvel sequel Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness delivered a colossal $449.8 million global opening, according to the latest report from the London-based analytics firm Gower Street. The launch was the second biggest of the pandemic-era behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home, which also featured the character of Doctor Strange (as played by Benedict Cumberbatch). The new hit reportedly tracked just 17 percent behind No Way Home in like-for-like markets. Multiverse of Madness did not release in Russia, due to the ongoing studio boycott of the market following the invasion of Ukraine, and Saudi Arabia, where it was banned.

UN, SAWA Launch Don’t Choose Extinction Campaign

The United Nations Development Programme and SAWA Global Cinema Advertising Association today launched an eight-week international cinema advertising aimed at raising awareness of the climate emergency and spurring broader, urgent action to address it. In the 60-second cinema ad, Frankie, a computer-generated dinosaur is seen storming into the UN General Assembly, seizing its iconic podium, and urging stunned-looking dignitaries to avoid the dinosaurs’ fate—extinction—by making changes to tackle the climate crisis.

Fathom, Warner Bros. Showing The Wizard of Oz in Theatres

The incomparable Judy Garland would be celebrating her 100th birthday this June and to honor this special occasion, Fathom Events and Warner Bros. are bringing her unforgettable performance in The Wizard of Oz back to cinemas for a two-day engagement. The film will play in more than 800 theatres nationwide on Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network on June 5 and 6.

PVR Cinemas, Xperia, Bring Immersive Experiences to Cinema Advertising

PVR Cinemas, India’s largest film exhibitor, has introduced experiential in-cinema advertising for what it says is the first time in the cinema advertising domain. The innovation in collaboration with Xperia Group, an out-of-home media company hopes to create immersive experiences for the consumer for advertising content across different touch points in the cinema.
