Don’t Say Drones

The world is abuzz with talk of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and in order to avoid conjuring up images of CIA missile strikes, or NSA spying, I’ll avoid using their more common name – drone. The technological and commercial promise of this mode of aviation seems boundless. Amazon talks of delivering packages this way someday soon. Someday you might order a pizza and a UAV will make a beeline navigating by GPS over traffic right to your door. But as things stand today, professional filmmakers in the United States are not allowed to use UAVs on a movie shoot.

Christie Upgrades USC’s Ellen Norris Theatre

Christie, through a generous donation of equipment and installation services, will be the sole provider of all cinematic and audio equipment within the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts Eileen Norris Theatre, and will be working together with USC SCA in enhancing visual technologies, specifically cinematic ones.

Cinedigm, Great Point Media Announce Multi-Picture Deal

Cinedigm and Robert Halmi Jr.’s Great Point Media announced today they have entered into a multi-picture distribution and production output deal. In this multi-year deal, Great Point Media will deliver a minimum of eight cast-driven films primarily in the sci-fi and thriller genres. Cinedigm will distribute all US rights to the films, including theatrical, digital and video-on-demand, physical home entertainment and television. Additionally, Cinedigm will have a first look at Great Point Media’s extensive development slate. The first two films are expected by late 2014, with the balance of the initial slate delivered in 2015.

The Orchard Acquires Rights to Harmontown

The Orchard has acquired theatrical and digital rights spanning North America and the U.K. to Harmontown. The documentary, directed by Neil Berkeley (Beauty Is Embarrassing) and co-produced by Future You Pictures and Starburns Industries, follows Community creator and writer/producer Dan Harmon on tour for his eponymous podcast series. The film features appearances by Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman, Jason Sudeikis and Joel McHale -- among other A-list comics -- and will be released by The Orchard theatrically and digitally this fall.

European Children’s Films Outperform Adult Films at Box Office, New Study Says

The European Audiovisual Observatory has just published a brand new report on the theatrical circulation of European children’s films. The Observatory’s cinema analyst, Martin Kanzler, presented this new report at the KIDS Regio Forum, which took place in Erfurt, Germany June 20th.
