The 2016 NAB Show's The Future of Cinema Conference: The Immortal Movie, produced in partnership with SMPTE, will explore how content creators and storytellers combine artistry with motion-imaging technology to thrive today — and into the future. Acclaimed film director Ang Lee will give the keynote address, Pushing the Limits of Cinema, and discuss his vision for cinema and the creative opportunities for the future of filmmaking.

Call for Papers for SMPTE 2016

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is seeking proposals for technical papers for the SMPTE 2016 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition October 24-28 in Hollywood, California. The proposed papers must be informational and address technical theory, research, innovations, applications, or practices specific to any of the evolving technologies associated with the media technology industry. Initial abstracts must be submitted online no later than April 22.

SMPTE Receives Third AMPAS Award

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has received a Special Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. AMPAS presented the Special Award plaque to SMPTE at the Academy's annual Scientific and Technical Awards presentation, which took place Februrary 13 in Beverly Hills, California.

NATAS Honors SMPTE, Chuck Pagano

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has awarded SMPTE an Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering for its work on Standardization and Pioneering Development of Non-Live Broadband Captioning. The award was presented to SMPTE, Netflix, Home Box Office, Telestream, and the World Wide Web Consortium during the 67th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards ceremony, which was held January 8 in Las Vegas in conjunction with the international Consumer Electronics Show.

SMPTE Elects New Officers and Governors

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has elected its new officers and governors for the 2016-2017 term. "The elections bring the board an impressive array of industry leaders, all with a history of contributing valuable expertise and extraordinary energy to SMPTE events and standards work," said SMPTE past president Wendy Aylsworth, who served as nominating committee chair. "As we enter an exciting centennial year, the Society will benefit from our board of governors' collective experience and ongoing commitment to the Society's three pillars of education, standards, and membership."

SMPTE Elevates 15 Industry Leaders to Fellow Status

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has elevated 15 industry leaders to the status of SMPTE Fellow. This honor is conferred on individuals who have, through their proficiency and contributions to the industries, attained an outstanding rank among members of the Society. New SMPTE Fellows will be elevated on October 28, during the Fellows Luncheon, held in conjunction with the SMPTE 2015 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles.

SMPTE Leads Advancing Industry

During the show, 135 SMPTE member companies exhibited and more than 90 individual members served as speakers, contributing their expertise on topics ranging from the latest industry standards to the future of audio and moving images.
