AMC Acquires Seven Bow Tie Cinemas
AMC Theatres has finalized a deal with Bow Tie Cinemas to purchase and operate seven locations in Connecticut, upstate New York and Annapolis, Maryland.

Box Office Rebounds in April
Who said April is the cruelest month? In its second week of release, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 received a major boost as it opened in the Domestic market with a massive $72.1 million, proving the suggestion audiences weren’t coming back to cinemas incorrect, they just needed the product. Sonic 2 opened 24 percent higher than the 2020 original, according to the British analytics firm Gower Street.

CGR Cinemas, France’s second biggest multiplex chain behind Pathé, has been put on the market by its owners, Luc and Charles Raymond. The family-owned business has an estimated value of about $1.1 billion, according to Jocelyn Bouyssy, CGR’s long-time managing director who has been assigned to find a buyer for the group.

Whipped Sea and Abacus Media Rights have announced that the documentary feature Savage Waters will celebrate its World Premiere as the Opening Night Film at DocLands Documentary Film Festival in Marin County, California on May 5. The screening will be followed by a special Q&A. Savage Waters is directed by Mikey Corker (Beneath the Surface), produced by Ghislaine Couvillat (Girls Can’t Surf, Against the Tides, The Quest for the Wild) of Whipped Sea and edited by Emmy Award winning Editor Jordan Montminy (The 8th, A Courtship), with story consultation from BAFTA award winning Nic Guttridge (The Spy Who Fell to Earth, The Night Caller).
Hollywood History on Display
Art of the Hollywood Backdrop: Cinema’s Creative Legacy opens April 20th at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Boca Raton, Florida. The exhibit honors the unsung heroes who created these monumental canvases for the camera, going back almost 100 years. These artists were the backbone of the film industry. This is the first museum show dedicated to Hollywood’s painted backdrops, the grandest illusions ever created for the movies. These rarely seen masterpieces were never meant to be viewed by the public this way. They were kept secret by the Hollywood studios, meant only for the eye of the camera lens.
Saudi Arabia’s Cinema Success Grows
There was so much happening at the global box office in 2021 it was, perhaps, easy to overlook one of the most significant pieces of news: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia overtook Italy in annual box office in terms US dollars, according to a new report from the London-based analytics firm Gower Street. This put Saudi Arabia into the top six markets in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, the report said. It marked the first time on modern record that one of the so-called big six European markets (UK/Ireland, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, and Spain) had been supplanted.

Movie Studio Plan Approved in New Jersey
The Bayonne, New Jersey Planning Board has approved a major motion picture studio at the southern tip of the city. The movie studio, 1888, named after the year the motion picture camera was invented by Thomas Edison, will give a facelift to a long-vacant site. The studio will be constructed by 1888 Studios on nearly 75 acres of land at the former site of the Texaco oil refinery site.
Everest Documentary Restored
Twenty-five years after it debuted to wide critical and popular acclaim, the award-winning documentary Everest is back in giant-screen theatres. MacGillivray Freeman Films, producers of Everest, spent months completing an all-new 16K restoration of the film for a special digitally remastered release.
