Christopher Ray, colorist at Picture Shop, joined director Albert Hugues’s epic adventure last year on Alpha, setting the looks on-set with FilmLight Daylight. His collaborative work with Technicolor senior colorist Maxine Gervais relied heavily on creativity and on the Daylight-Baselight Base Linked Grade exchange. Digital Cinema Report recently spoke with Ray about the experience.
Crazy Rich Asians is one of the summer’s biggest success stories. Shot by cinematographer Vanja Černjul, ASC, HFC (The Perfection, The Deuce, Marco Polo) with VariCam Pure cinema cameras, the film is based on the best-selling novel by Kevin Kwan, and tells the story of an Asian American woman who meets her boyfriend's family, only to find out they are one of the richest families in Singapore. The Warner Bros film was directed by Jon M. Chu (Now You See Me 2, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) and features an all-Asian cast, including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ken Jeong, Michelle Yeoh, and many others. It is the first Hollywood studio film to feature Asians in leading roles since director Wayne Wang’s 1993 film, The Joy Luck Club.
My Breathing on Everest journey kicked off less than a year out of university when my friend and frequent collaborator Meredith Gaito came to me with an idea she knew most other people would call too ambitious or downright crazy. A year and a half later I have been to Nepal twice filming at the base camp of Mount Everest for what has become a deeply personal documentary.
UK-based Colin Nicolson has worked as a production sound mixer and recordist since the eighties, first in television and documentaries then increasingly in motion pictures, over recent years racking up credits including Murder on the Orient Express, T2 Trainspotting and The Theory of Everything. MTV’s new reality series, Siesta Key, takes the tried and tested concept of earlier efforts like Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County and moves it to Florida, following a new group of young adults confronting issues of love, heartbreak, betrayal, class, and looming adulthood as they spend the summer together in their beautiful hometown. Siesta Key is set on a small barrier island off the coast of Sarasota. Cinematographer Gareth Paul Cox shot the series with VariCam 35 and LT cinema cameras.
The Abu Dhabi Film Commission is set to work with one of India’s most anticipated Bollywood movies, Tiger Zinda Hai. The Yash Raj Films production will have its longest shoot in the Emirate, and will be Abu Dhabi’s longest feature film project to date with a filming schedule of 65 days.
Continuing its momentum of attracting regional and international productions, Abu Dhabi Film Commission has secured a new Indian production for which the capital will serve as the second filming location for two weeks. The upcoming Telgu feature film, Duvvada Jagannadham (also known as DJ), is written and directed by Harish Shankar and will shoot in various locations across the Emirate including the Abu Dhabi Global Market, Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Intercontinental Hotel, Yas Links Golf Club and Galleria Mall, with access to twofour54’s production services.
