Warner Bros. Names Ziehl Senior VP, Public Affairs, Strategic Initiatives

Barry Ziehl has been named senior vice president, public affairs and strategic initiatives for Warner Bros. Entertainment, it was announced by Dee Dee Myers, executive vice president, worldwide corporate communications and public affairs, Warner Bros. Ziehl, who currently oversees worldwide public relations and marketing for Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will assume his new responsibilities in the coming weeks and report directly to Myers.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to Release Blu-ray Titles with Dolby Atmos

Dolby Laboratories and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced a collaboration to release SPHE titles in Dolby Atmos over the coming years, including SPHE’s first films to be released in the 4K Ultra HD disc format. The first films to be released in the new 4K Ultra HD disc format with Dolby Atmos include The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Salt, Hancock, Chappie, Pineapple Express, and The Smurfs 2 in early 2016, with additional titles to be announced throughout 2016 and beyond.

ATSC Elects New Board Members

Members of the Advanced Television Systems Committee have elected five industry executives to serve on the ATSC Board of Directors for three-year terms beginning January 2016. New to the board are Christopher Homer, Vice President, Operations & Engineering, PBS, and Anne Schelle, Executive Director, Pearl TV. They will join re-elected board members Brett Jenkins, Media General; Richard Friedel, Fox Networks; and current board chairman Glenn Reitmeier, NBC Universal.

Kodak Super 8 Challenge Tops 500 Entries

Kodak has enlisted an elite list of filmmakers, a photographer and industry professionals to be judges for the Kodak Super 8 Filmmaking Challenge. The competition, launched in November, has received more than 500 entries submitted by a wide range of Super 8 content creators around the world. There are two rounds of judging for the Jury Awards, with votes being cast by cinematographer Rachel Morrison, photographer Elliott Landy, producer Glenn Gainor, writer-producer Josh Friedman, film festival director Leslie Raymond, and Pro8mm founders Phil and Rhonda Vigeant.

Alliance for IP Media Solutions Launched to Promote Open Standards

A group of broadcast and media industry suppliers including Grass Valley, Imagine Communications, Lawo and Snell Advanced Media have collaborated to form the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS). This new, independent trade association’s mandate is to bring IP solutions to market that offer complete interoperability, are based on open standards, and integrate seamlessly into media workflow environments to foster industry innovation and efficiency. The group’s efforts will be focused on promoting the adoption, standardization, development and refinement of open protocols for media over IP, with an initial emphasis on VSF TR-03 and TR-04, SMPTE 2022-6 and AES67.

Why We Film, a documentary backed by the Association of Moving Image Archivist’s Film Advocacy Task Force, is an exploration of why and how film is engaged as a physical object and experience – the compelling reasons audiences watch it, filmmakers create with it, schools teach with it, and the key factors pointing to the need for its preservation. Today, its Kickstarter campaign was chosen as a Featured Project on the Film & Video category page of the funding platform’s site. It was also recently chosen as a Staff Pick.
