Making Birds of Paradise

Produced for Amazon Studios, the feature film Birds of Paradise tells the story of two girls at an elite Parisian ballet academy that have their bond and bodies tested as they compete for a contract to join the company of the Opéra National de Paris. The film was directed by Sarah Adina Smith, who not only adapted the A.K. Small novel for the screenplay, but also happens to be director of photography Shaheen Seth’s wife.

Goldcrest Post Upgrades its Sound Department

Goldcrest Post has completed a major upgrade to its sound department, expanding its capacity to deliver soundtracks in Dolby Atmos Home Theater format. State-of-the-art immersive sound technology has been added to the facility’s Studio A to accommodate streaming, broadcast and home theater projects requiring Atmos sound. Goldcrest’s largest mix stage, Studio Q, was upgraded to support Dolby Atmos Home Theater in 2018.

Production Thriving in Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is rapidly becoming a crucial film production location in the region, officials there say, favored by both local and international production companies. The main reasons for the attraction are the Lithuanian Film Tax Incentive and the availability of high-level film professionals. Although the pandemic partially slowed down projects, the film industry in the city has been quickly restored, and 13 foreign feature films have already been shot in Vilnius this year.

Laika Begins Production on Wildwood

Laika’s next animated feature film is Wildwood, based on the bestselling novel written by Colin Meloy, lead singer and songwriter for The Decemberists, and illustrated by artist Carson Ellis. The announcement was made by Travis Knight, president & CEO of the award-winning animation studio, who will direct the film. Wildwood is currently in production at Laika’s facility outside Portland, Oregon.

SMPTE Honors Arri Image Science Engineer Harald Brendel

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has awarded Harald Brendel, Head of Center of Competence Image Science at Arri, with the Natalie M. and Herbert T. Kalmus Medal Award. With this prize, which has been handed out since 1956, the industry association recognizes outstanding technical achievements in film production, post-production, and film distribution.

MPSE Accepting Entries for the Verna Fields Student Award

The Motion Picture Sound Editors association is now accepting submissions for its annual Verna Fields Student Award honoring outstanding work by student sound editors. The award, which will be presented at the 69th Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony on March 13, 2022, is open to students worldwide with the winner receiving a grant from MPSE’s Ethel Crutcher Scholarship Fund. The award named for legendary sound and picture editor Verna Fields, who won an Academy Award in 1976 for her work on Jaws.

Canon Unveils the EOS R3 Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

Building on the success of the EOS R camera series, Canon today unveiled what it is calling the next leap forward in full-frame mirrorless cameras, the professional-grade Canon EOS R3. The new camera leverages the advancements in technology that Canon has developed since the original EOS R launch in 2018 and bridges the gap between the EOS R5 and the Canon flagship EOS-1D X line. The EOS R3 is the first 3 series camera from Canon since the widely used EOS-3 film camera launched in 1998.
