Special Effects Artist Offers Training to Cherokee Nation Film Students

As film and television productions continue to expand into Oklahoma, Cherokee Nation is helping prepare Native Americans to join the rapidly growing industry. The tribe’s film office recently partnered with Tulsa artist Tate Steinsiek to introduce students to the special effects field. The Cherokee Nation Film Office supplied full scholarships for Native American students interested in attending Steinsiek’s Introduction to FX Gore and Blood Gags for Film course.

Hula Post Supported the Editing of The Batman

Hula Post supplied editing systems for The Batman, the long-running franchise on the superhero, based on the DC Comics character Batman. The feature harkens back to his second year of crime-fighting when he pursues the Riddler. Hula Post provided Avid Media Composer workstations, Nexis storage, and workflow designs for editor William Hoy, ACE, and first assistant editor Matthew Simpson initially in their homes then later at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California for the entire editorial team.

Post-Production Veterans Set to Celebrate the ‘90s

A group of post-production industry professionals have come together to celebrate their experience in the 1990s, a decade whose seismic changes continue to reverberate today. Calling themselves the ‘90s Los Angeles Post Production Veterans, and led by MTI Film CEO Larry Chernoff, the group has established a Facebook presence with nearly 2,000 members and is planning to host an in-person reunion party on May 19th.

MPSE Celebrates Movie Sound’s Past and Present

The Motion Picture Sound Editors will draw on the most accomplished sound artists of its past in celebrating the best in sound editing of the present at the 69th Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Five past recipients of the MPSE’s Career Achievement Award will serve as presenters during the Golden Reel Awards ceremony to be held as a fully virtual event on Sunday, March 13th.

Love Conquers All, Even Tubas

A boy enlists a tuba in a quixotic quest to woo the girl of his dreams in the heartwarming short film Mariachi Boy, directed by Michael Gabriele and produced by Daily Planet. Proving the timeless maxim that love conquers all, the film follows the boy as he repeatedly shows up in the front yard of a cute Hispanic girl and tries to serenade her. His mangled attempt to perform a mariachi tune on his bulky instrument perplexes the girl and annoys her father. Ultimately, the boy’s dad comes to his rescue by rounding up a troop of professional mariachi musicians to provide backup.

SOC Names Camera Operators of the Year

The Society of Camera Operators has announced that the recipients of Camera Operator of the Year in Film are Mitch Dubin, SOC, and B Camera John “Buzz” Moyer, SOC (West Side Story). The recipients of Camera Operator of the Year in Television are Manolo Rojas, SOC, and B Camera Pauline Edwards, SOC (Snowfall, Season 4, Episode 8, Betrayal). The award recipients were celebrated by industry peers and colleagues during a virtual awards ceremony on Saturday, March 5.
