Christie will be providing all the projection for Spain’s first permanent dome to showcase 360° and other immersive environments including a second dome dedicated to virtual reality. Held in Madrid, the Immersive Festival Madrid 2016 is running from May 18-21 at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and is free to attend.
The Brooklyn Film Festival has announced their full slate of films for the 2016 edition of this Brooklyn cultural mainstay, which will include the U.S. premiere of Sean Garrity’s award-winning Borealis set to open the festival June 3. This charming, moving and often comedic family drama stars Jonas Chernick, Joey King, Emily Hampshire and Kevin Pollak and has picked up several awards on the festival circuit, including best director for Garrity and a special jury prize for King at the Canadian Filmmakers’ Festival and an honorable mention for best actress award at the 2015 Vancouver International Film Festival. Pollak, Chernick, Hampshire, King and director Garrity are confirmed to attend.
The Library of Congress is once again providing a unique opportunity for film scholars and archivists to play cinematic detective by participating in its free Mostly Lost workshop. The case is solving riddles and finding clues to the identity of unidentified, under-identified or misidentified silent and early sound films. The scene is the state-of-the-art theater at the Packard Campus in Culpeper, Virginia, and the date is Thursday, June 16, through Saturday, June 18.
Vista Group has signed Jinyi International Cinemas following a project piloting Vista Entertainment Solutions software in 19 of its cinemas over the past several months. Jinyi is the third largest cinema exhibition chain in China with 138 cinema sites across southern and eastern China. For VES, Jinyi is the second large-scale chain that the company has secured in China in the last 18 months following Dadi Digital Cinema in 2014.
Located in Xi’an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province, in the recently opened CityOn Xi’an shopping mall in the heart of the city’s new Central Business District and administrative center, the Xi’an Oscar CityOn International Cinema has nine halls, including a premium large screen auditorium fitted with a 24.2-meter wide screen – the largest in Xi’an. It is the first cinema in central China to be equipped with the Christie CP42LH 3DLP 4K RGB laser projection system.
CJ 4DPlex has installed its immersive seating technology in the east European market, available for the first time in Slovakia through a partnership with Cineworld Plc, Europe’s number two multiplex chain. CJ 4DPlex brought the first 4DX theatre to Slovakia on May 11, and the first screening presented was Captain America: Civil War, beginning May 12. Cineworld’s Cinema City is operating three multiplexes and 29 screens in Slovakia and the first 4DX theatre is located in Cinema City Aupark, the biggest residential area with easy access from any point in Bratislava, the central city of Slovakia. Cinema City Aupark, operating 12 screens and 2313 seats, is situated in Aupark Mall, the most famous culture complex shopping center in Slovakia, including lots of restaurants, sports centers, cafes, and shops.
House of Vans, in partnership with Rooftop Films, is bringing two memorable evenings of music and cinema to the House of Vans Brooklyn. Celebrating Rooftop Film’s 20th Annual Summer Series and the on-going House of Vans global expansion, they will bring creativity to life under one roof with the world premiere of Andrew Cohn’s documentary Danny Brown: Live at the Majestic and the New York debut of director Angela Boatwright’s Los Punks: We Are All We Have.
Universal Pictures and The Film Foundation celebrated the Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere screening of the newly restored 1961 film, One-Eyed Jacks, starring and directed by Marlon Brando. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, who had long advocated for the film's restoration, closely supervised the work to ensure the restoration honored Brando's original artistic vision. One-Eyed Jacks was digitally scanned in 6K and restored in 4K from the original 35mm VistaVision negative.
The International Cinema Technology Association will host its technical expert seminar June 19 prior to CineEurope at Cinesa Diagonal Mar close to the CCIB Convention Centre.
Laser protection was one of the big stories of last month’s CinemaCon convention. All four projector manufacturers featured laser technology in their exhibits and all four announced significant sales. Many people can claim some measure of credit for laser projection’s success in digital cinema but none more than Bill Beck. His advocacy for the technology, which goes back more than a decade, has justifiably earned him the title The Laser Guy.
