Disney’s Newsies Fathom’s Top-Grossing Broadway Event
Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical three-day cinema event broke ticketing records to become the highest-grossing Broadway event to date from Fathom Events. An estimated 210,250 people saw the event on big screens across the U.S. on February 16, 18 and 22, amounting to $3.47 million in ticket sales. It also now ranks as the No. 2 top-performing title for Fathom Events to-date.
RealD Acquires Masterimage 3D Assets, Technology
RealD has acquired the remaining assets of MasterImage. Assets acquired by RealD include all intellectual property, technology, inventory, and accounts receivable previously controlled by MasterImage.
Christie Names NFTS Most Promising Student
The twelve-year partnership between the National Film and Theatre School and Christie includes sponsoring the NFTS Graduate Awards. This year the Christie Award for Most Promising Student went to producing MA graduate, Andrew Oldbury. Oldbury was presented with a Christie Captiva laser phosphor projector.
Ymagis Group Reports 2016 Revenue
Ymagis Group today reported its consolidated revenue figures for the fourth quarter of 2016 and 2016 fiscal year ended December 31, 2016. Ymagis Group continues its strong growth trend in 2016, the company said, with cumulative revenue up +13 percent at €178.2 million due to acquisitions undertaken in the last 18 months. Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2016 is up +1.6 percent at €52.3 million.
Point90 Cinemas Installs Volfoni 3D
Point90 Cinemas is the first major cinema multiplex in the Fifth Settlement, New Cairo, Egypt, located right in front of the American University in Cairo, inside the Point90 mall. Its aim is to offer the ultimate cinema experience to the audience, with 11 premium screen halls equipped with the latest movie projection and sound technology. As part of that effort, Point90 is installing Volfoni 3D systems.
SMPTE Journal Honored by Technical Group
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers’ SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal has earned a Distinction Award from the New York Metro, Philadelphia Metro, Atlanta, and Rochester Chapters of the Society for Technical Communication. By receiving this honor in the STC regional competition, in which entries are judged on technical content, achievement of purpose, and technical execution, the Journal advances to the STC International Summit Awards competition.
Barco Calls for an HDR Standard
In ever increasing numbers, exhibitors around the world are making the transition to laser projection. In response to that, at CinemaCon 2017 Barco will unveil the DP4K-40LHC and 20LHC RGB Flagship, 6P 3D single chassis, integrated high contrast projectors to the American audience. But nowhere in the new projectors’ specs will you find the term high dynamic range, which, given their capabilities seems like an oversight. Barco has a specific explanation for this, namely that it believes the exhibition world needs an HDR standard.
Barco Releases 2016 Annual Report
Last week, Barco presented a strong set of results for 2016, with high single-digit sales growth and EBITDA margin accretion. At the same time, the company published its 2016 Annual Report online.
