Barco to Highlight CinemaBarco at CinemaCon 2016

Barco will highlight CinemaBarco at CinemaCon 2016, April 11-14 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. CinemaBarco includes Barco Laser Projection, Barco Escape, AuroMax and Barco Lobby Experience. Recent independent and exhibitor surveys indicate that moviegoers give the highest image quality scores to laser-illuminated screens. They also state that this premium experience would entice them to visit the cinema more frequently and that patrons are willing to pay a higher ticket price for the laser-projected movie, resulting in significantly higher revenues for exhibitors.

Funimation Releases Empire of Corpses

Funimation will screen The Empire of Corpses in more than 50 theaters across the United States on April 19 and 20. The film is the first in a series of three movies based on novels by award-winning writer Project Itoh and is directed by Ryotaro Makihara. "We're pleased to bring this first in the series of films based on Project Itoh's novels," said Gen Fukunaga, founder and CEO of Funimation. "'The Empire of Corpses' is a truly captivating sci-fi action thriller – perfect for the big screen – and one that fans will certainly enjoy."

IFP Film Week Moves to Brooklyn

After 37 years in Manhattan, IFP’s signature event, IFP Film Week is moving across the river to Brooklyn. The event will set up shop in DUMBO anchored around its headquarters, the Made in NY Media Center By IFP. Since its downtown beginnings as the Independent Feature Film Market in 1979, IFP Week has evolved into a must-attend gathering for the global storytelling community. It remains the only international co-production market for film – and now television, web-based, and VR projects – in the United States, with over 150 projects from over 22 countries curated and presented as scripts and works-in-progress each year.

WorldFest Houston Opens April 8

Opening night celebration for WorldFest Houston the 49th Annual Houston International Film Festival is Friday, April 8. Bo Brinkman’s Last Man Club will open the festival; it will close with Hope, a Charles Irving production directed by Lakisha Lemons. Last Man Club is a film years in the making that pays tribute to Brinkman’s father, a WWII veteran. The film involves a small group of WWII veterans who set out on a personal mission many years after the war has ended to honor a pact they made. It’s a film about grit, true loyalties and determination, real life issues with a touch of humor. Many of the scenes were shot at Ellington Field.

Ymagis Begins Rebranding Initiative

Ymagis Group has begun a complete corporate rebranding initiative effective immediately, and which will be rolled out through the second quarter of 2016. The rebranding effort encompasses all aspects of the visual identity of each of the company’s brands as well as the complete revision of the company tagline, mission and vision statement. The company is now structured into three business units with new names and visual identities.

Satellite Coverage Grows in Latin America

Digital cinema electronic distribution in the Latin American region is rapidly reaching theatres, delivering studio and independent movies as well as live alternative content. Out of the estimated 12,000 screens in the region (some 2,200 theatres), electronic distribution has been growing to reach more than 6,000 screens. Mexico is the main contributor to the number, as Cinepolis and Cinemex account for more than 5,500 of those screens.

Share Dimension Opens U.S. Office, Adds Executives

Share Dimension has opened an office in Los Angeles and appointed several people to support the fast growing global organization. Christiane Ducasse has been appointed vice president, sales and business development, North America. The company is also announcing new members of their finance team, located in Europe. Dennis Siemelink will be global finance controller and Simona Bota, finance administrator. Matt Klosinski, account manager and product specialist, is also joining the Los Angeles office.

Cinema Sound: Klipsch Group

Movie theatres are getting bigger again and exhibitors have learned that audiences are willing to pay for the kind of immersive entertainment that simply can’t be duplicated in the typical home theatre. This trend has only increased the demand that the audio match, or even surpass, the quality of the images on the big screen. Cinema sound has never been bigger or more important. Understanding that, Digital Cinema Report reached out to key manufacturers to learn what developments in sound technology they’ll be highlighting when the exhibition industry gathers next month at CinemaCon 2016 in Las Vegas. In the final part of this ongoing series, I spoke with Dusty Thomas, cinema sales manager, North & South America, Klipsch Group, to get his perspective.
