European 3D company Volfoni has filed a counterclaim to the intellectual property lawsuit filed by RealD in Germany. Volfoni further announced the retention of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP, one of the leading intellectual property law firms in the world, to represent Volfoni in intellectual property related legal proceedings.

Volfoni developed a carefully crafted legal strategy in response to the complaint raised by RealD in their lawsuit against Volfoni (and CinemaNext) in Düsseldorf, Germany. In their suit, RealD alleged infringement of three patents by Volfoni’s high-performance SmartCrystal Diamond 3D cinema system. In Volfoni’s counterclaim, the company has provided strong arguments based on non-infringement and invalidity to be used to defend its superior technology.

“Volfoni is one of the leading innovators for 3D cinema technology systems. We have developed a strong portfolio of intellectual property, backed by an equally strong portfolio of patents in the relevant countries,” said Thierry Henkinet, chief executive officer of Volfoni. “We have full confidence in the legal basis and IP basis of our products in the markets that we serve, and we look forward to prevailing in court."

“Quinn Emanuel is one of the best and most famous law firms specializing in intellectual property throughout the world. I can think of no better law firm to represent Volfoni than Quinn Emanuel for this case,” Henkinet said.

The case is being adjudicated in the Regional Court of Düsseldorf, Germany. Volfoni said it will soon publish a whitepaper summarizing the status and the company’s legal strategy in English.
