A national study, conducted by Showcase Cinemas in celebration of National Popcorn Day, Sunday January 19 , discovered that more than 2.7 million kilograms of the sweet or salty snack was enjoyed by film fans while watching a movie at its cinemas nationwide last year. Extrapolated across the total number of cinemas in the UK, Brit film fans tucked into approximately 146 million kilograms of the iconic movie snack in 2024.

The Showcase Cinemas research has revealed that Peterborough is the popcorn capital of the UK, with one in four (24 percent) cinemagoers in the town purchasing popcorn when they visit the big screen, with Reading and Nottingham (both 21 percent) coming in second and third place.

In celebration of the classic cinema treat, this National Popcorn Day Showcase Cinemas is giving film fans a special offer of popcorn for just £1. To claim this offer, customers will simply need to have a ticket for a film showing on January 19 when they purchase a small popcorn in cinema.

Jon Dixon, UK marketing director at Showcase Cinemas said, “We are delighted once again to be offering £1 popcorn this National Popcorn Day. For years, popcorn and cinema have gone hand in hand, and guests love to treat themselves while they enjoy the big screen experience. Our research has revealed just how much the UK really does adore it, and so do we - we take pride in popping all our popcorn fresh on site at our cinemas. We’re sure customers will take us up on our offer and celebrate National Popcorn Day by enjoying a tasty portion of popcorn at a special price. And hats off to the people of Peterborough who love their popcorn more than anyone else in the country.

“There are some huge films on the big screen on National Popcorn Day, from the critically acclaimed Nosferatufamily favorite Mufasa: The Lion King and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, so there really is something for everyone.”

Also, Showcase Cinemas is extending the £1 popcorn offer into the following day, meaning guests can treat themselves to a discounted snack on Blue Monday, too.
