Harkness Screens recently carried out an independent verification of the new Volfoni SmartCrystal Diamond Passive 3D system and has added it to its Digital Screen Modeller tool.

“We’re constantly asked to give an informed opinion on the capabilities of the latest cinema technologies and how these affect cinema presentation,” said Matt Jahans, European technical services manager for Harkness Screens. “Being able to independently test the SmartCrystal Diamond system on behalf of Volfoni enables us to better understand this brand new technology and provide our customers and indeed the industry as a whole with insight into its capabilities.”

Tested at Harkness’ screen laboratory facility in France, Harkness certified the overall light efficiency of the new Volfoni SmartCrystal Diamond system at 28 percent.

“It is easy as a manufacturer to quote a theoretical technical capability to the industry. Having a respected voice like Harkness independently verify our SmartCrystal Diamond 3D system adds an extra level of credibility to our technology,” said Alain Chamaillard, EMEA managing director of Volfoni.

The verification test was carried out in a controlled environment by projecting white light on to a 10 meters (39 feet) Clarus 170 3D screen surface.  Initial light measurements were taken in 2D with no 3D equipment (3D unit or glasses) between the projected light path and a light meter.  These were then compared to light readings taken from the same position in the screen laboratory with both the SmartCrystal Diamond unit and eyewear between the projected light path and light meter.

“Having seen the SmartCrystal Diamond 3D system operating with Harkness’ new Clarus technology, it is obvious that cinema exhibitors have a new and exciting combination of the latest technology to enable some of the best 3D experiences to date.  We believe that in SmartCrystal Diamond 3D and Clarus technology from Harkness exhibitors around the world can now benefit from the brightest, most immersive and captivating 3D experience for their customers at an affordable price.  There is no doubt having seen the technology up close that in Clarus Harkness has developed a screen technology that will enhance the movie going experience around the world and we look forward to working closely with them on further technology collaborations in the future,” Chamaillard said.

Harkness has added the new SmartCrystal Diamond 3D system to its Digital Screen Modeller tool, which will be available to download from the Apple App Store for iPad and Google Play store for Android during mid/late December 2013.
