Barco will be showcasing its high dynamic range Lightsteering projection technology at this year’s Asian World Film Festival being held November 9-18 in the Marina Del Rey section of Los Angeles. The festival presents a selection of Asian World cinema to the community of Los Angeles moviemaking professionals. The festival is unique in that it predominantly screens Oscar and Golden Globe-submitted films from Asia for Best Foreign Language Film. Since the festival’s inception, it has screened more than 100 Oscar and 50 Golden Globe submissions.

For the first time, the 2022 festival will offer seven titles graded in HDR. These will be screened in the dedicated premium auditorium at the festival, equipped with a prototype setup of Barco’s HDR Lightsteering technology.

Among these titles selected for premium screening are six Official Submissions for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards. In a collaboration with the Barco HDR content creation team and the directors of the different submissions; the titles were regraded to take full advantage of the enhanced capabilities of the high dynamic range format and the Lightsteering projection technology.

Barco’s HDR Lightsteering is a projection technology that allows bringing next generation premium image quality to cinema auditoriums. In the future, it will offer both brighter highlights and darker black levels, to enable a higher dynamic range in the image. It does this by making efficient use of laser-generated light through smart steering; leading to a projection setup that combines backwards compatibility with cinema operations and future-proofness for HDR content and premium experiences.

This gives moviemakers more degrees of freedom and a broader palette to work with. For movie-goers it brings a more immersive experience, a wow-effect to fit the large screen. Barco is proud to work together with the Asian World Film Festival, its moviemakers, and its audience members to showcase this innovative technology.

The Barco HDR Lightsteering auditorium is installed at the AMC Marina Marketplace 6.

On November 15, Barco’s head of HDR content workflow, Joachim Zell will be hosting a workshop at the Asian World Film Festival entitled Color Consistency: from the movie set to the theatre. In this workshop, Barco will present the tools that are being developed to support the new HDR content creation end-to-end.

The workshop is from 5-8 p.m PDT. Tickets are available for $10 via this link.
