Showbiz Cinemas is pleased to announce that the Ballarat Showgrounds in Wendouree, Australia will soon be home to the first local drive-in cinema operation since the closure of the Southern Drive-In Theatre in 1991. The retro initiative will operate each weekend for at least six-months from November 13.Showbiz Group director Chris Jones says, “We are absolutely delighted to be able to bring this concept to fruition after such a difficult time for our community in recent months. It has certainly been a challenging time for everyone in business. Our Ballarat cinema situated at the Delacombe Town Centre has been closed due to COVID restrictions for most of the past seven months.”

Showbiz Cinemas at DTC is also expected reopen to the public in the coming weeks, in-line with the state governments easing of restrictions. John Bourke, who worked at both of Ballarat’s previous drive-ins in the 1970s and 1980s has come on board to assist with the operation.

“During these COVID times, we have seen many instances of drive-in theatres start to re-emerge in overseas markets,” Bourke said, “and now in Australia as we enter the warmer months. The notion of having a drive-in start up again in Ballarat is indeed a very exciting time.”
