The future of independent film production in a post-covd-19 world is taking “virtual” shape at Pace Pictures in Hollywood. The boutique facility recently used groundbreaking virtual production technology to produce Match, a feature-length romantic comedy from director Sean McGinly (Silver Lake, The Great Buck Howard). Actors were shot on a green screen stage and placed into virtual three-dimensional environments while incorporating complex camera movement and lighting. Most remarkably, principal photography was accomplished in just five days and at a fraction of the cost of most conventional film productions.

Opsis Delivers on Songbird

Visualization services company Opsis recently provided end-to-end services from concept, pre-vis, post-vis, and finalizing VFX shots to assembling the right talent on Songbird, director Adam Mason's new dystopian thriller from producer Michael Bay. Opsis integrated VFX Legion into its effects team.

Access:VFX E-Mentoring Program Grows, Annual Report Shows

The e-mentoring program of Access:VFX, the industry-led non-profit coalition of leading visual effects, animation and games studios, has to date connected more than 1000 mentors and mentees across the globe. The Prospela run platform features members from Framestore, Blue Zoo and DNEG, among others, and has helped talented up-and-coming creatives from varying backgrounds and ages.

Rising Sun Pictures Wins VFX Award for The Eight Hundred

Rising Sun Pictures has won the 2020 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award for Best Visual Effects or Animation for its work on the Chinese World War II epic The Eight Hundred. The Adelaide-based studio helped to recreate the 1937 Battle of Shanghai, where a small Chinese army mounted a determined defense against a larger invading army. Directed by Guan Hu and produced by Haining Seventh Image Movie & Media Co Ltd, The Eight Hundred is among the most successful Chinese movies ever made, and the highest grossing film globally for 2020, having earned $446 million (RMB 3.02 billion) in total box office.

First Virtually Produced Feature Underway

Signs of life for the movie industry have just been spotted on Mars. A group of veteran Hollywood filmmakers have announced plans for Gods of Mars, a feature-length sci-fi epic, to be produced through a blend of revolutionary virtual production technology and special effects techniques from the original Star Wars era. Providing a possible blueprint for filmmaking’s future, the hybrid technique allows productions to move quickly, and at a fraction of the cost of today’s $200-plus million studio blockbusters.

P-Valley Posts in New York City

Editorial and post-production finishing for the eight-episode, first season of the hit Starz series P-Valley was centered in New York as several Post New York Alliance member companies helped bring the fictional small town of Chucalissa, Mississippi vibrantly to life. New York City facilities Goldcrest Post, Harbor and Technicolor PostWorks each played a role in the project, as did Foley specialist Alchemy Post Sound and VFX studio The Molecule.

She Dies Tomorrow Filmmakers Discuss the Film at NAB Show New York

Director Angel Manuel Soto's powerful award-winning coming of age drama, Charm City Kings won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Inspired by the dirt-bike culture revealed in the documentary 12 O'Clock Boys, the film is the story of Mouse (Jahi Di'Allo Winston), a boy who desperately wants to join an infamous clique of bikers that rules the inner-city streets of West Baltimore. It centers on the 14-year old's emotional struggle between a strait and narrow path and the thrill and fast money of a biker's world filled with violence.
