Alchemy Post Sound put on its tap shoes (and a whole lot more) to create the Foley sound for Fosse/Verdon, FX’s critically acclaimed limited series about choreographer Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and his collaborator and wife, the singer/dancer Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams). Working under the direction of supervising sound editors Daniel Timmons and Tony Volante, Foley artist Leslie Bloome and his team performed and recorded hundreds of custom sound effects to support the show’s sultry dance sequences and add realistic ambience to its historic settings.
Post-production sound for this summer’s blockbuster hit from Columbia Pictures, in association with Marvel Studios, Spider-Man: Far From Home, was completed by Sony Pictures Post Production Services. Supervising sound editor and sound designer Steven Ticknor, re-recording mixer and supervising sound editor and sound designer Tony Lamberti and re-recording mixer Kevin O’Connell led a team of veteran sound artists in delivering dynamic soundscapes to match the film’s full throttle action, mind-blowing superhero gadgetry and larger-than-life characters, the latter including a quartet of extra-dimensional creatures with colossal powers known as the Elemental Creatures.
With a unique improvisational acting style at the heart of the Netflix original film, Paddleton, capturing audio was of paramount concern for sound supervisor Daniel S. McCoy CAS, owner and operator of ToneMesa, Inc. “Sometimes, the team would go off to unplanned locations and I’d have to be ready to follow immediately,” says McCoy.
Sound production for Columbia Pictures’ new action adventure Men in Black: International was completed by Sony Pictures Post Production Services on the studio lot in Culver City. Three-time Academy Award-winning sound designer/supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Paul N. J. Ottosson led the sound team in delivering a host of ingenious sound elements to support the film’s colorful cast of characters, super-charged action scenes and extraterrestrial comedy.
Sound production for Her Smell¸ writer/director Alex Ross Perry’s new film about a self-destructive punk rocker named Becky Something (Elisabeth Moss) was completed at Goldcrest Post in New York. Ryan M. Price served as supervising sound editor, sound designer and re-recording mixer on the project, delivering a rich and nuanced soundtrack that brings to life a seedy rock club, an indie recording studio and other points along Becky’s road to ruin and eventual redemption.
“Mixers are artists, and I am a firm believer in the creative process,” says re-recording mixer Binder. “In the post-production audio business, we get looked at as technicians instead of artists. I believe that George Lucas was right when he said, ‘sound and music are 50 percent of the entertainment in a movie.’ ” Binder should know. He’s worked with some of the most notable names in the TV and film industry, including the Russo brothers, J.J. Abrams and Mark Mangini. His resumé also boasts a variety of high-profile projects such as Star Trek, Paranormal Activity, Community, Channel Zero, Deadly Class and Super 8.
Production sound mixer Adam P. Lawrence has had a lifelong love for audio/visual storytelling. For the last decade, Lawrence has turned that passion into a career, mixing audio on countless film and television productions. As with any field production, radio frequency interruptions rank highly on the list of worst-case scenarios among audio professionals.
The Motion Pictures Sound Editors presented the 66th MPSE Annual Golden Reel Awards at a black-tie ceremony at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles last Saturday night. Golden Reel Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in sound editing were presented in 23 categories encompassing feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries, games, special venue and other media.
Los Angeles post house Inventure Studios has renovated its Studio C with the installation of a Severtson projection screen. Now all four of its studios are equipped with a Severtson woven acoustically-transparent screen. Seveterson dealer Keith Watanabe supervised the installation.
Twenty years ago, Sound Lounge was born out of a desire to create something that did not exist in the audio post-production community. Tom Jucarone, Peter Holcomb and Marshall Grupp imagined an artist-owned studio that put a premium on excellence in everything related to sound, but with a laid-back, friendly vibe. It would be a studio packed to the rafters with state-of-the-art gear, a place where they could work at a high level and nurture the next generation of sound talent, but also a “home” where they wouldn’t mind hanging out after the work was finished.
