Antaviana Films Completes Work on Array of Feature Films

Barcelona post-production and digital effects house Antaviana Films recently completed work on an array of feature films, including Incerta Glòria by Agustí Villaronga, La Higuera de los Bastardosby Ana Murugarren, and Non è un paese per giovani by Giovanni Veronesi. For these projects, Antaviana Films used Mistika Ultima with a Tangent Element control panel for conforming, color correction, finishing, and VFX compositing.

A young reporter and his niece discover a beautiful and enchanting creature they believe to be a real mermaid, in the 1930s period tale The Little Mermaid, a live-action film inspired by the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and co-directed by Chris Bouchard and Blake Harris. Book-ended in the present day, The Little Mermaid gave cinematographer Neil Oseman the opportunity to use Cooke S4/i lenses to their fullest, capturing the look he loves from the fantasy/adventure films of the 1980s and1990s for The Little Mermaid’s 1930s look.

Marc Chu Joins Atomic Fiction as Animation Department Supervisor

Atomic Fiction has named Marc Chu to lead the studio's animation efforts across its Oakland and Montreal locations. Chu joins Atomic Fiction from ILM, where he most recently served as animation director, bringing more than 20 years of experience animating and supervising the creation of everything from aliens and spaceships to pirates and superheroes.

SMPTE Hollywood and VES to Study AR

The Hollywood Section of SMPTE and the Visual Effects Society Los Angeles Section will conduct a joint meeting June 22 to examine the rapidly evolving field of augmented reality. AR is creating new ways for people to experience the world. At this joint meeting of the SMPTE Hollywood Section and VES Los Angeles, a panel of experts will provide an overview of the AR landscape and the technologies driving it. They will also share insights into emerging business opportunities and offer advice on what it takes to get involved in this exciting new field.

Horse Soldiers 100th Dolby Cinema Title

Dolby Laboratories today announced that Warner Bros. Pictures’ Horse Soldiers is the 100th Dolby Cinema title. "Reaching the 100th announced title for Dolby Cinema is a tremendous accomplishment that couldn’t have been achieved without the support from the directors and filmmakers who want to use the best technology for their storytelling,” said Doug Darrow, senior vice president, cinema business group, Dolby Laboratories. “In 2017 we announced 44 Dolby Cinema titles, more than any other premium format, which is a testament to the ongoing commitment from Hollywood and studios around the world to deliver the best experience to the cinema.”

Avoiding Torn Frames in Ghost

Typically, torn frames appear when a flash or strobe is not properly timed with a camera’s shutter and frame rate. They appear as a flash in the bottom half of one frame followed by a flash in the top half of the next frame. An innovative light source helped Ghost in the Shell cinematographer Jess Hall, BSC avoid the problem and bring a new level of visual sophistication to director Rupert Sanders’ epic feature.
