Deutchman Film Archive Going to Michigan

The University of Michigan Library will welcome the papers of another maverick to their growing collection of material that highlights visionaries in the genre of independent film. Ira Deutchman has announced that he will donate his entire archive to U-M's Screen Arts Mavericks & Makers collection. The announcement was made December 2 at Lincoln Center in New York.

SMPTE, HPA Announce Student Film Winners

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and the Hollywood Post Alliance have announced the winners of the inaugural SMPTE-HPA Student Film Festival. Held last month in Hollywood, California, during SMPTE’s annual fall conference, the film festival showcased submissions demonstrating creative uses of technology in storytelling.

Autodesk Launches 3ds Max 2016 Extension 2

Autodesk has launched Autodesk 3ds Max 2016 Extension 2 for 3D modeling, animation and rendering. Building on 3ds Max 2016 and Extension 1 releases unveiled earlier this year, Extension 2 expands the software’s capabilities with new tools and workflow improvements that simplify and accelerate the creation of 3D assets for design visualization and content creation professionals.

Marcus Theatres Adds 4DX Seats at Gurnee Mills

Marcus Theatres, the fifth-largest theatre chain in the United States, has opened the Midwest’s first 4DX location at the Gurnee Mills Cinema in Gurnee, Illinois. The first movie to take full advantage of the 4DX technology will be Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea, December 11, which will enable moviegoers to experience the story of Moby Dick with 4DX special effects, including motion, vibration, water, wind, lighting and scents.

Deluxe Completes Work on Spectre

Deluxe Entertainment Services Group has completed a wide range of services for Spectre, the 24th James Bond feature, released in the UK on October 26 and worldwide on November 6. Deluxe completed digital post-production elements completed the digital intermediate coloring, and film and digital dailies; created on-screen graphics; and delivered the highly anticipated feature to movie theatres around the world. Deluxe worked with the production team prior to initial shooting through to distribution.

Movio Analyzes Mockingjay Audience

Movio has released insights on the audience buying tickets for Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. Movio co-founder and chief executive Will Palmer said, “The audience profile is 45 percent women between the ages of 14 and 49, which is three percentage points greater than for Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 over the same weekend. The audience is about three years younger than an average film adaptation of a post-apocalyptic young adult novel. They are avid moviegoers who attend during opening week 64 percent of the time. Mockingjay Part 1 was the most popular film this audience saw at the cinema over the last 24 months.”

SMPTE 2015 Called a Success

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has announced that the SMPTE 2015 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition exceeded organizers' expectations, drawing more than 75 expert presentations, nearly 100 exhibitors, and 2,328 registered attendees hailing from more than 35 countries — the highest attendance in more than a decade. The SMPTE conference is the premier annual event for motion-imaging and media technology, production, operations, and the allied arts and sciences.
