CinemaCon 2019: Netflix and PLF Theatres

From the earliest days of feature length films until the 1980s, the movie going experience typically happened in a very large theatre with a really big screen. Faced with rising costs and increasing competition from television, exhibitors of that sad era cut their buildings into multi-screen complexes to increase ticket sales and maximize profits on concessions. Today, faced with a different set of economic realities, exhibitors around the world are increasingly responding by creating movie palaces that rival all but the most spectacular theatres of the turn of the last century. One trend at this year’s CinemaCon, which wrapped up last week, was the continuing rise of premium large format theatres. Another trend was the almost comical trashing of Netflix. PLF theatres and Netflix are both here to stay; we’ve been here before

GDC Technology Links to the Cloud for Cinema Operations

GDC Technology today launched TmsAware, a new cloud based solution powered by Amazon Web Service serverless architecture. The most recent development of cloud computing, which caters to web applications, was initially used for cost savings and efficiency. But the cloud has turned into an innovation powerhouse. GDC developed TmsAware to have a significant effect on the cinema’s operation process.

SFC Yonghua Cinema City Opens China’s Second Onyx Theatre

SFC Yonghua Cinema City has become the second facility in China to open a Samsung Onyx theatre. Local technology provider Ace Film & TV installed JBL Sculpted Surround cinema speakers and Crown networked power amplifiers. SFC Yonghua Cinema City is the first cinema in China to feature intelligent networked audio solutions across the entire facility.

GDC Technology Unveils FAST Media Servers

GDC Technology has introduced the SR-5400 and the SR-6400 series media servers with Flexible Architecture Stable Technology (FAST) for 4K high frame rate movies and 4K 3D. The SR-5400 is compatible with new DLP Cinema projectors that are capable of playing DCP content in 4K 3D and 4K@60fps. The SR-6400C has all the key features and benefits of the SR-5400 and further enhances its capabilities to include ground breaking 4K@120fps playback. It is compatible with the new Christie projector featuring RealLaser illumination and CineLife+.

Cinemex Selects GDC as Media Server Provider

GDC Technology will be Cinemex’s exclusive provider of digital cinema servers for the calendar year 2019. Cinemex is Mexico’s second largest theatre circuit and operates 2,936 screens at 340 sites in 99 cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Toluca, Juarez, Leon, Tijuana, Mexicali, Puebla and other Mexican cities. The agreement involves the deployment of the GDC SR-1000 Standalone Integrated Media Block at all of Cinemex’s new construction projects in Mexico.

The Beach Bum Releases in ÉclairColor HDR

Distributor Neon has released The Beach Bum in Éclair Color high dynamic range at select Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations across the United States. This marks the first title available in Éclair Color HDR across the U.S. The movie opened in Germany (Constantin Film) in Éclair Color in March and will open in France (Mars Films) in July.

CinemaNext to Equip New Saudi Arabia Cinema Brand Muvi

Systems integrator CinemaNext has reached an agreement with Saudi fashion retail giant Fawaz Alhokair Group for the installation of its first multiplex in Saudi Arabia under the new cinema brand Muvi. Scheduled to open in May at the popular Mall of Arabia in Jeddah, CinemaNext will equip the 15-screen multiplex (2,063 seats) with 4K laser projectors and state-of-the-art surround sound.
