The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC) today released preliminary 2021 box office and admissions estimates for the territories covered by the organization. While these figures are based on initial estimates, the overview provided by UNIC represents the first wide-ranging assessment of the performance of the European cinema sector in 2021. More detailed final data on the performance of each individual UNIC territory will be released later in spring 2022.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas has announced that it will be the anchor tenant for a company called Orchestra Partners as it redevelops the historic Powell Steam Plant in Birmingham, Alabama. The theater will take up about 50,000 square feet of the former steam plant, while the remaining 36,000 square feet are still available for retail and dining. Construction on Alamo Drafthouse will begin this summer with an anticipated opening in the fall of 2023.
The National Association of Theatre Owners will honor Ellis Jacob, president, and CEO of Cineplex, with the 2022 NATO Marquee Award during this year’s CinemaCon. The company says these options provide an ideal way to connect exhibitors at a significantly lower cost than was previously possible.
