New Drive-In Theatre Opens in Downtown Miami

Nite Owl Theatre has created a laser projection drive-in cinema experience in the heart of Miami, Florida. Featuring a 53-foot screen, the Knight Foundation-backed theatre can accommodate between 65-70 cars per screening. This enables Miami area movie lovers to reconnect with the big screen from the safety of their car and ensures theater guests will enjoy enhanced visual experiences, with brighter higher quality images, while maintaining social distance in the new venue.

Ultimate Outdoor Entertainment Installs Tampa Rooftop Drive-In

The Rooftop Cinema Club partnered with Ultimate Outdoor Entertainment to create the Drive-In at Armature Works in Tampa, Florida. Earlier this year, UOE began providing Rooftop with the screens, technology and equipment to add drive-in movies to their rooftop cinema experiences. Last week’s grand opening featured Grease. The Tampa location is the third venue UOE and Rooftop have partnered on; several more locations are expected by Spring 2021.

Moderated by ICTA vice president Frank Tees, the group presented five interviews describing innovative approaches to exhibiting movies outdoors.

Star Cinema Grill Opens a Drive-In

Last August, the Star Cinema Grill in Richmond, Texas, a Houston suburb, was having great success in its premium large format auditorium thanks to having installed the largest Samsung Onyx LED Cinema Screen in North America. It was just the second exhibitor in the country with an Onyx and audiences loved the experience; the theatre was sold out for almost every show. Cut to this August and times have changed dramatically. The United States in general and Texas in particular are still dealing with the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the handful of indoor theatres that are open are working under severe restrictions. In response to that, Star Cinema Grill is in the process of opening a drive-in theatre at its Cypress, Texas location

The Sound of Fear

Called “one of the most prescient films of the decade,” She Dies Tomorrow from Neon and writer/director Amy Seimetz, centers on a woman who believes she is about to die from a mysterious illness that is also highly contagious. The psychological thriller, which recently went through sound and picture finishing at Goldcrest Post in New York, delves into universal feelings of anxiety and dread through a story that blends horror, humor, drama and the surreal. Seimetz used sound to convey the feeling of fear.
