Despite the fact that the industry adopted an internationally ratified SMPTE DCP standard nearly a decade ago, there remains widespread confusion and disagreement about what constitutes a universally accepted digital cinema package. If that sentence makes no sense to you, you’re not alone. For months the European Digital Cinema Forum with sponsorship from the International Union of Cinemas has been developing a web portal to address this problem. Their mission statement is, “To act as an informational resource for the industry on the SMPTE DCP and its operational use, and to provide a point of reference of on-boarding for those individuals/organizations willing to aid in the transitional process on a territory by territory basis.”
Event cinema distributor Trafalgar Releasing announced plans today to provide immediate funding to U.S. cinema operators for the deployment of equipment that will significantly expand live event capabilities in domestic cinemas and offer open access to content owners with live event offerings.
Nagra’s myCinema is releasing the film The Moomins and the Winter Wonderland in theatres across North America this holiday season. The film will begin screenings December 7.
Éclair has appointed Anno Storbeck as head of production for Éclair Studios, the new state-of-the-art dubbing and automatic dialogue replacement studios in Central Berlin. He will be responsible for the artistic and commercial production management of all dubbing and ADR productions for film distributors, producers, rights holders and content service crossover sales. Based in Berlin, Storbeck reports directly to Éclair country manager Michael Krauth.
Mangurama and Bobb Films have acquired the U.S. and Canadian theatrical distribution rights for director Abby Epstein (Until The Violence Stops, The Business of Being Born) and executive producer Ricki Lake’s (The Business of Being Born, Breastmilk, The Mama Sherpas) Weed the People. The film premiered at the 2018 SXSW Festival, was the Audience Award Winner at The Nashville Film Festival and will have a West Coast premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
Ymagis Group and Webedia have announced a partnership to promote EclairColor HDR cinemas and mastered films on AlloCiné (France) and Filmstarts (Germany). The companies’ two websites attract respectively 13.8 million and 3.1 million unique visitors per month.
Last summer, Emagine Entertainment showed the first-run movie Ideal Home starring Paul Rudd at its Royal Oak Cinema in Detroit using Nagra’s myCinema technology. “This is the first-time audiences have enjoyed a feature length film leveraging advanced digital compression technology via Nagra-secured myCinema theater premise equipment,” said Jean-Luc Jezouin, Nagra’s senior vice president business development. “The plug-and-play experience of the myCinema solution offers a significant leap in digital cinema distribution technology, alleviating enormous costs experienced with traditional digital cinema prints.”
The way it’s supposed to work, a cinema should be able to acquire DCI Compliant equipment with the assurance that first release movies would not be withheld for reason of having the wrong gear. With the recent release of its DCI Memorandum Regarding Direct View Displays, it is no longer clear where DCI is heading.
Filmmaker Megan Griffiths has announced that she and producers Lacey Leavitt and Jennessa West will independently release her acclaimed drama Sadie. Working with creative distribution strategist Mia Bruno, the film will begin its roll out in New York and Los Angeles on October 12.
