AMIA Film Projection Workshop Convenes in Austin August 22

AMIA and the Alamo Drafthouse, in partnership with The Film Foundation, are offering a three day projection workshop for projectionists and staff presenting 35mm film in theaters. The workshop offers speakers and hands-on tutorials for projectionists working with 35mm film prints and will focus on film preparation and projection as well as special stipulations for archival projection, and coordinating with lending institutions. The workshop is aimed at those who have some booth experience and are looking to expand their knowledge and skills.

Reel Thing Explores Restoration, Preservation

The 38th edition of The Reel Thing, a three-day symposium addressing audio/visual restoration and archiving, will explore the constantly evolving ecosystem of film and digital restoration and preservation. This year's program will examine legacy film restorations and showcase modern technologies being used to future-proof collections and keep them viable for future display and distribution formats. The event will take place August 18-20 at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

Colosseum Transformed for Bourne Premiere

When scouting for a location for the premiere of Jason Bourne, Universal Pictures chose Las Vegas, an obvious choice since it’s the scene of the film’s climactic and chaotic car chase. But finding a venue large and grand enough to launch the film was another matter. There aren’t many movie theatres that can accommodate the thousands of celebrities and industry insiders expected to attend. Knowing that CinemaCon, the theatrical exhibition industry’s largest trade event, is held each year at Caesars Palace and that screenings are successfully done in the Colosseum, Universal felt confident that the 4,000 seat venue could provide a fitting launch pad for the new $120 million action thriller.

Cineworld Selects AAM TMS Software for More Than 750 Screens

Cineworld Group, one of Europe’s largest cinema businesses and operators of the Cineworld chain, has selected AAM’s Screenwriter Theatre Management System software for more than 750 screens. AAM already supplies Screenwriter TMS software, as well as its Producer enterprise circuit management software, to Cineworld’s 900 screens in the UK. This deal significantly extends AAM’s software footprint across several new geographic areas, including Israel and Eastern Europe.

Christie Supports Sail-In Cinema

Four Christie digital cinema projectors will transform Toronto’s Sugar Beach into an outdoor movie theater from August 18-20 at PortsToronto’s sixth annual Sail-in Cinema. For the first time, Christie will be a major sponsor of Sail-In Cinema– an annual event that invites movie-goers to bring their lawn chairs and blankets, or anchor their boats in Toronto’s Harbor to enjoy three nights of movies under the stars. Movies will be shown on a two-sided, four-story screen mounted on a barge in Lake Ontario.

National CineMedia Names Katie Scherping CFO

National CineMedia today named Katie Scherping chief financial officer effective August 11, 2016. Scherping will also serve as CFO of NCM LLC. With more than 30 years of finance, accounting and managerial experience, Scherping comes to NCM from Quiznos, where she had served as interim president and CEO since June. Previously, she had been a part of the Quiznos management team in the role of chief financial officer since December 2013.
