MoviePass surpassed the mark of 600,000 paying monthly subscribers as of October 18, up from approximately 20,000 as of August 14, the day before MoviePass announced its new $9.95 per month subscription price. The continued growth trajectory exceeded MoviePass’ initial projections, and now MoviePass projects that it will acquire at least 3.1 million additional paying subscribers by next August, exceeding its previous estimate of 2.5 million subscribers.
As the digital cinema era enters a new phase, exhibitors are increasingly looking at better ways to directly engage with their customers. Regal Cinema, long an industry leader, seems to have found a particularly interesting one. Concourse Media principals James Andrew Felts and Matthew Shreder announced today a deal with Regal Entertainment Group to distribute Moviebill, an interactive new product that has been crafted to enhance and extend the 21st century movie going experience. The inaugural edition will be announced later this year for a 2018 launch.
Dennis Doros, co-owner of Milestone Films, has been elected president of the international Association of Moving Image Archivists. Doros will be inducted into office at the annual AMIA Conference in New Orleans November 29 – December 2, when he will begin a two-year term. He succeeds Andrea Kalas, who has led the organization forward for the past two years.
Marcus Theatres has signed a three-year agreement for Cinema Equipment Supplies’ Cielo Director’s cut service covering 807 screens in 61 locations across the United States.
Barco has set another record for cinema laser projector deployments, this time for all-laser multiplexes, in which an exhibitor outfits every auditorium with either a Barco Flagship Laser or Smart Laser projector. There are now one hundred Barco all-laser mulitplexes around the world.
Ymagis Group has appointed Pascal Mogavero senior vice-president, Eclair. He replaces Christophe Lacroix, who has been named group deputy CEO and entrusted with the management of EclairColor and EclairGame.

POSitive Cinema Solutions has named Mark Waldman director of sales and marketing. A seasoned professional with experience in programming, corporate training, product management and sales in several vertical markets, Waldman joined the cinema industry in 2002, as the IT director, for Palace Cinemas, now Cinema City. Palace Cinemas had 22 sites and 180 screens with cinemas in Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia. In the nine years at Palace Cinemas, he oversaw the transition to digital cinema, as well as the development of a proprietary point of sales system.
QSC has announced a new digital cinema input/output) for their Q-SYS network and control platform for cinema. The company says the DCIO provides a simple and cost-effective way to route inputs from the projector integrated media block and alternate content sources to a Q-SYS Core over Q-LAN, QSC’s network technology.
Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé, the largest cinema chain operator in France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, has installed Dolby Cinema at Pathé Massy, south of Paris, and will open today. This marks the first Dolby Cinema in France, with Pathé Vaise in Lyon and Pathé Docks 76 in Rouen opening later this year.
