Barco, Imax Expand Relationship, Plan Full Laser Conversion

Barco and Imax Corporation have announced the further expansion of their long-standing relationship. As part of the expansion of their ongoing partnership, the companies will now collaborate on optimizing the use of Barco’s latest laser light source technology to help power Imax systems globally, further enabling Imax to convert its more than 1,000 systems to laser over time. An additional multi-year support agreement will enable not only the brightest but also the most reliable performance for Imax laser theatres across the world.

National CineMedia Showing New COVID-19 Vaccine PSA

National CineMedia is now showing the Creative Coalition’s new COVID-19 vaccine PSA in movie theatres around the country. The spot, titled Be There. This Is Your Shot and starring Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman, urges Americans to “Trust science. Get the vaccine.” The PSA was produced in partnership with the National Blue Ribbon Task Force to Stem COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy, led by The Creative Coalition and Yale University School of Public Health.

Cinemas Worldwide Fight Back

March offered two major signs of recovery for the beleaguered cinema business, according to the latest report from Gower Street Analytics, London. Firstly, there was the impressive international opening of Godzilla vs Kong; the first global hit since the pandemic began over a year ago. Secondly, the long-awaited re-opening of cinemas in New York City and Los Angeles helped the U.S. Domestic market to achieve the highest grossing month in a year. With the first challenging quarter of 2021 behind us, wrote Gower Street analyst Thomas Beranek, the recovery of the global theatrical market, while still fragile, looks as promising as it has in months.
